Hamlet is a William Shakespeare tragedy that takes place in Elsinore, Denmark and published in 1603. A tragedy is an event that involves great suffering and death, Hamlet has many. The play opens up with Marcellus and Bernardo seeing a ghost whom tells Hamlet that he needs to seek revenge on Claudius, the ghost looked like his father. This ghost set the motive for Hamlet to search for evidence of his father’s death for the entire play. William Shakespeare 's Hamlet explicates and demonstrates the common theme of death being an equalizer throughout the tragedy of Hamlet starting with the death of King Hamlet all the way to Hamlet 's own death. “To be or not to be—that is the question:…” (Shakespeare 127). Hamlet writes a lot of plays and as a result he decides to make another play, which he would call The Mousetrap Play. He does not just make any ordinary play though, this play was created to symbolize the exact killing of his dad. But, Hamlet would have Claudius sit in the audience and watch this play. If he reacted to the scene of the killing in any bizarre way then Hamlet would know it was Claudius whom killed King Hamlet. Hamlet assigns Horatio to note Claudius’s reaction. When the king sees the scene he says, “Give me some light. Away!” (Shakespeare 153). Abruptly, the play ends. Then everybody in the room exits except Horatio and Hamlet. At this point Hamlet realizes what has happened, he continues to act crazy. Polonius comes to tell Hamlet that Gertrude wants to meet with him. When they meet Hamlet makes her feel awful. But while they are talking, Polonius is standing behind a curtain listening to the conversation. Hamlet notices somebody listening and thinks it is Claudius. He stabs the man through the curtain. He then lifts the curtain up and notices it is Polonius. Hamlet shows little mercy for Polonius’s death because of his intruding on a private conversation. Gertrude tells Hamlet that he has done terrible for killing Polonius but Hamlet responds saying that it is not as bad as killing a king and marrying her brother.
