Haiti When it comes to culture, I believe it is the characteristics of a person, or a group that makes them unique. Everyone is somehow different and not everyone has the same beliefs. “Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.” (Kim Ann Zimmermann, Live Science 2017) The Republic of Haiti declared its independence against France on 1 January 1804. The country is located in the Caribbean Sea on an island name Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti has an estimated population of 10.6 million, making it one of the most populated countries in the Caribbean. Haitian corruption is ranked amongst the highest, with the richest one percent owning the same wealth as the poorest forty five percent. It is believed that most Haitians practice “Black Magic” or voodoo. Only a small percent of the country practices voodoo and it is not used to target victims but to heal the sick. Malaria, intestinal parasites and sexually transmitted diseases take a toll on the population. Per eight thousand Haitians there is only one doctor. Medical facilities are understaffed and are in very poor condition. Most of the workers in these medical facilities are incompetent. The life expectancy of a Haitian is only fifty one years of age. Haitian beliefs on afterlife depends on what religion the individual falls under. The catholic Haitians believe they will either be rewarded or punished in the afterlife depending on what kind of lifestyle they carried.
