The salon industry’s main focus is outer beauty, however, there are serious, if not deadly consequences when a closer look is taken on the effects this industry has on inner health. These consequences have potentially deadly implications for those who are exposed to the chemicals present in many popular services offered by salons. Those especially at risk and who suffer from an array of negative health conditions are the beauticians and salon workers who suffer long-term exposure as these chemicals are breathed in and absorbed through the skin through the course of the workday. It’s no wonder that cancers, upper respiratory complications, and skin conditions are rampant among workers in the salon industry. Hairspray is just one of many examples of a seemingly harmless product that is used by most, if not all cosmetologists for a large percent of the services rendered every day. When hairspray is sprayed, albeit focused on a target, disperses throughout the salon, concentrated mainly within a two or three foot radius of the stylist and her client. The client gets an average of five minutes in this cloud of chemicals over the course of her service. The stylist, however, gets an average of five minutes per client per day. Lye can burn the skin upon initial contact and cause short-term to permanent blindness if the eye is contaminated. Stylists and clients alike are at risk for developing asthma or upper respiratory conditions or infections. Long-term exposure to these chemicals can also cause burns to the skin, eyes, and lungs.
