Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976. Habitat could identify themselves as poverty or basic human rights. Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization where donations are vital to help buy supplies to help build and repair homes. More than 1 million people each year volunteer to build with us under trained supervision. Habitat for Humanity also has “A Brush with Kindness” and a “Disaster Response”. “A Brush with Kindness” is an exterior home preservation program that offers painting, landscaping and minor repairs. “Disaster Response” provides shelter assistance, education, training and partnership to those affected by disasters. They are trying to get families off the streets or out of shelters. Not only are they building houses, but they are remodeling them too. If an elder woman is living alone, she might not have the money or the connections to have someone fix her roof or her house because it is falling apart. Habitat for Humanity will help that elder woman out by remodeling her house, free of charge. Not only can you help donate, but also you can help your community out. In the Late nineteenth century the population was growing at a rapid pace. The country had people flooding the biggest cities in the country such as New York City and Chicago. These populations were gaining more and more people every single year and the country has to do something to make places for these people to live. The government would go on to create urban housing programs. These programs were created to make homes for these people to live in. At the time it provided a place for people to live but as the populations grew it became a more cramped and rundown area because of the large populations in one place. These reforms eventually led to these areas becoming dangerous, they were rundown, and it created a hole that was difficult for people to get out of.

The residents of Hull-House, at the request of the surrounding community, began to offer practical classes that might help the immigrant people or poor people become more combined different things together so they worked as one unit into American community of people these classes where, English language, cooking, sewing, abilities to do particular job-related tasks well and American government. The residents were the women and men who chose to live at Hull-House; they paid rent and added to the activities and services that the Settlement was committed to providing to their neighbors. The Hull-House became not only a cultural center with music, art, and theater, but also a safe place and a place where poor people and immigrant people could find the help they needed for successfully they overcome their poverty. Hull-House exists today as a social service agency, with locations around the city of Chicago. The University of Illinois at Chicago has preserved a small part of the buildings as a museum after the University razed many of the original buildings of Hull-House.
Therefore, the supply of housing that is affordable and accessible to low income people should be increased. Plus assistance that allows people to reach adequate stability should be regarded as a good investment in a productive society, in order to attain our objective. First we could start by introducing more productive assistance programs that actually focus on helping those in need of housing assistance. These programs will analyze how long people are homeless, what are their needs, the causes of homelessness, and in all how many are currently without a home. There are multiple places where those who are homeless can go and stay and have nice warm shelter during the night, or until they can get back up and on their feet. Another organization is Feeding America, who are a hunger relief charity and they take the lead with helping with the homeless. They provide food assistance to 25 million people throughout the country with low income, which includes elderly and the youth. A house is simply a structure where one lives, sleeps and eats. A home is a structure accumulated with love, memories, and lessons learned. “Homes have stopped being homes. Now they are real estate.” (Quindlen) These structures are no longer viewed as places of experience and reminiscence, they are given a literal and unemotional purpose. Perhaps the reason as to why nearly one million people are homeless is because they are no longer provided with the pure substance of what a home represents. A home is “everything” , one cannot be a fulfilled individual without one for it offers a sense of self, demonstrates a loving relationship and provides an unfailing feeling of entitlement.

I performed my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The non‐profit organization chooses the applicant that purchases the house and Habitat only charges them the cost of the materials.
