Other effects of the disease include frequent colds, ear infections, upset stomachs, and chronic diarrhea. HIV and AIDS first started to appear in the United States in the late seventies. No one in the government or the medical profession had any idea how this disease would change the life and life expectancy of thousands of people all over the country. Sexual lifestyles completely changed in the U.S. because of the AIDS outbreak. People are no longer able to have several intimate relationships before marriage without the fear of contracting this death threatening virus (Kübler-Ross 29).
"They can't get jobs. They can't even afford proper food, forget about drugs." The same doctor who told me that 95% of the patients are HIV positive lamented that the only treatment she can offer is multivitamins and one antibiotic!!! How do we expect the younger generations to hope for a brighter future in this environment? I was told that many South African young people have a fatalistic, "I'm-going-to-die-anyway" attitude.
The blood center even had a written policy stating that donors who volunteer that they are gay should not be allowed to give. In the case of, J.K & Susie L. Wadley Research Inst. v. Beeson, Mr. B a patient received several units of blood from the blood center during his surgery. Mr. B later going back to the hospital for being sick tested positive for HIV and his wife tested positive. At trial, damages of $800,000 were awarded to Mr. B’s widow.
According to the policy, "for those women without prenatal HIV test results who decline HIV testing during delivery, hospitals are required to conduct expedited HIV testing of all newborns" (New York State Department of Health, June, 1999). This policy was the consequence of a heated debate in the legislature over the results of anonymous HIV screening performed on pregnant women in the state of New York (Cameron, 2002). New York State had been engaged in anonymous testing of newborns since the late 1980s, and this testing consistently reve... ... middle of paper ... ...d November 24, 2004, from http://www.philosophers.co.uk/cafe/phil_jul2001.htm Turner, B. Prevention of HIV Transmittance to Babies Last year, it was cause for celebration. The cause of celebration was for the results that several clinical trials of zidovudine cut the risk for mother to child transmission of human immune deficiency virus (HIV) by two thirds. Although, this year, it is the basis for new federal recommendations that all pregnant women should receive HIV testing and counseling. But, these findings have been cause of protests by several activist groups. Activists fear that conservative legislators and policy makers will use the clinical data to justify mandatory testing and treatment for pregnant women.
To achieve this goal, we have 2 options, development of vaccine and treating all HIV patients with the concept of treatment for prevention. Vaccine development is the best but we still not get perfect vaccine although we are trying for many years. So people decide to develop second option which is more realistic at this moment because of available tool, antiretroviral therapy (ART). And we can see from UNAIDS report that new infection and death reduce gradually since development of ART in 2002. It did happen even without full coverage of ART to all HIV... ... middle of paper ... ...patient due to lack of systematic recording system and selling the drugs - Losing jobs due to HIV and sell ART half dose for buying food and take once per day instead of twice - ART taking patients moving to the other places where no ART clinic there.
When my mom twisted her ankle my Aunt Bertha faked a seizure. We could tell it was fake because Aunt Bertha would stop seizing long enough to put more food in her mouth. She has gone to three licensed doctors who all said she needed to receive psychiatric help because she was showing no signs of M.S. My Aunt Bertha then found a all natural doctor who doesn’t use modern drugs or tests who confirmed her diagnosis of M.S. The doctor then proceeded to prescribe pills to my Aunt saying that they were the cure to M.S.
The speech that I will be analyzing is Mary Fisher’s 1992 speech “ A Whisper of Aids”. Mary Fisher is known to be a powerful and outspoken HIV/AIDS activist after she contracted HIV from her second husband. As a HIV positive individual and public speaker she advocates to help those suffering with HIV, educate the public, and prevent the spread of HIV throughout America by spreading awareness. In 1992 it was still thought that HIV/AIDS only affected homosexuals, prostitutes, or drug addicts. Due to such false beliefs and stereotypes the research for HIV/AIDS had stopped and people did not become aware of the seriousness of the disease.

No illness has been treated with the same hysteria as HIV and this is because of its associated stigmatization and promiscuity. CONCLUSIONS In 1985 AIDS was viewed as an immediate death sentence, and a horrific one at that, to the infected person. There was apocalyptic terror that this epidemic could wipe out mankind.
