What differs HIV from AIDS is once HIV destroys many of the CD4 cells the infection progresses to a point of no return, AIDS. AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It has always been believed that some diseases and viruses were transferred from animals into the worlds population, but some conspiracies say otherwise. AIDs has always been a huge virus that millions of people have suffered from since it came about in 1979(Guyatt). HIV is passed from one person to another by blood-to-blood or through sexual contact. Once the virus spreads, it turns into AIDS, which then attacks your immune system. A conspiracy dating back to the 1980s states that HIV/AIDS was created by the CIA with statistics and proof of experimentation backing up the theory.
Sailors aboard the ships had all been infected with the plague. Most of the men were dead, but the few remaining were severely ill. James Giblin stated in his book that a historian recorded, “They had sickness clinging to their very bones.” (Giblin 13) As the ships arrived, the people visiting at the docks of Messina began to panic. There had been rumors of a pestilence terrorizing the E... ... middle of paper ... ...nce of the streets sent the message out that there was no authority and crime rate increased significantly. (Kelly 206) The Great Pestilence that haunted Europe in Medieval times took out more than a third of its population. After diseased rats and fleas made their way to the ports of Messina, Sicily by ships the plague spread across Europe ever so quickly.
No one knows exactly how the AIDS virus erupted. However, one presently dominant theory states that AIDS originated from monkeys in Africa that transmitted the HIV virus to humans through bites (Forsyth). As people migrated it reached Haiti and then spread to America (Clark p. 65). The bubonic plague, too, was a spontaneous epidemic. The Black Death occurred because a bacillus was carried by fleas that fed off the blood of humans and transmitted the deadly bacillus in the process (Packer).
HIV is a world pandemic that has caused the death of “30 million” (CDC – Statistics Overview – Statistics Center – HIV/AIDS, CDC) innocent lives. HIV is devastating virus that destroys people’s immune systems and leaves them vulnerable to other diseases. HIV is an acronym for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which means that the virus is found only in humans and targets the immune system. The virus kills CD4 cells, cells in the immune system that fight off infections and diseases. HIV has been around since the “1950’s.” (AIDS, 6) About “34.2 million” (CDC – Statistics Overview – Statistics Center – HIV/AIDS, CDC) people are living with HIV today.
What is HIV/AIDS? HIV or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus debilitates the immune system by destroying the T-cells, which are the cells that fight disease and infection in the organism. HIV first infects these cells and multiplies using them, later destroying them. (Whiteside 2008) AIDS or the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is the last phase of the HIV infection. In this phase, an infected person’s immune system is severely damaged and has difficulties fighting diseases.
The HIV virus can be broken down into:- Human – since it’s specifically known for infecting humans only Immunodeficiency - causes the immune system to lack defence or protection hence making it prone to opportunistic infections on all the T-cells meant for the function of securing it. Virus - the virus overtakes the T-cell by using them to multiply themselves, hence taking control over the system (What Is HIV/AIDS?, 2012). 1.1.1TRANSMISSION METHODS • Cuts from Sharp objects e.g. Sharing of unclean needles between drug users , accidents • Mother to child transmission • Transfusion of infected blood. • Unprotected sex 1.2.
But Fumento thinks that AIDS spending should be realistic, not just tailored to fit the needs of protesters and demanding organizations, simply to keep them quiet. They also both agree that AIDS is a new and upcoming epidemic that is becoming more of a problem with each passing year. Each realizes that the disease is no longer only confined to drug users and homosexuals. Thurman states that, "Frequently they are in poverty and have abusive relationships, and often have mental problems on to of that-the list goes on and on. So our clients today are much more complicated to treat" (Thurman 1).
AIDS “ AIDS is actually the final stage... of infection with what we know as the AIDS virus” (Langone 8). “ AIDS is... also accepted as a syndrome, a collection of specific, life- threatening... infections and symptoms that is the result of an underlying immune deficiency - a deficiency not caused by any known conditions and illnesses other than infection with the AIDS virus” (8). There is one main explanation of how AIDS started and came to America. Scientists believe that when the Portuguese took Africans to Japan, the Africans got AIDS from the monkeys (63). The monkeys would be in the trash, and when the people, including the Africans, would chase the monkeys away, the monkeys would fight back biting and scratching (63).
