War, a deadly battlefield shed in the blood of two enemies locked in an endless fight. The topic of war has always been a controversial one because of its terrible effects, but necessity with human nature. In “Two Friends”, Guy Maupassant goes to show that war is truly a devastating event, especially for innocent bystanders who are caught up in the crossfire. With the dramatic deaths of the main characters, and the primary theme of the conversations between them being the tragedies of war it is clear that Maupassant is attempting to send a message about war, and a negative one at that.
The first way he goes about showing this is with the friends’ constant conversation about the effects of the war; all which are negative. The friends talk nonstop about the troubles and pains of war, going as far as to call the governments “fools” and “worse than animals”. In fact, it seems that in the story that all the two friends talk about is how much they despise both the French and the Persian governments, and that “they will never change their ways as long as they exist”. Maupassant is clearing attempting to show the emotional effects on the French people at that time, and he is illustrating most of the negative ones.

With his dramatic use of the characters deaths along with most of the conversation in the story directed negatively about the war, and the negative portrayal of the general, Maupassant intends to show that war is a truly devastating event and is in no way a sensible act.
