Gun Violence:
Affecting the Country and Its Citizens
In 2010, there were more than 31,000 firearm deaths in the United States: 62%were suicides, 36% were homicides, and 2% were unintentional (2%) (CDC2012a). Almost as many Americans die from gunfire as die from motor vehicle crashes (almost 34,000 in 2010). Americans under age 40 are more likely to die from gunfire than from any specific disease (CDC 2012a). While there are so many incidents involving Gun violence, there is not much being done to prevent it from occurring on a daily basis. These incidents have resulted in many people getting injured or even being murdered, whether they were young toddlers or a elderly woman in her 80's. Many people believe that that countries must come up with better ways to prevent gun violence. There needs to be better ways to control the distribution of guns in the United States and globally, because if there isn't, then there is always the risk of witnessing a shooting or being at the wrong end of one.
Recently there has been plenty of violence in the U.S., involving guns, this has led some ask themselves, what is causing so much gun violence? Charles Derber, a Professor of Sociology at Boston College believes that most people think of gun control failure and movies or just those who are mentally ill for the high amount of gun violence(Derber:" When Wars Come Home"). His argument is that gun violence could be highly related to the large military that the U.S. has spread throughout the world. In his claim, all the weapons that the U.S. has produced find their way back to the U.S. The problem with his claim is that he states how they got here, but doesn't say why they are using them.
