Do we need tougher gun control laws? I think that before entering this topic of why it is necessary to put in place more laws that prohibit the acquisition or use of firearms in the United states, and why not in the entire world, I think it is of vital significance to expose the concept of firearms.
Firearms: Device destined to propel one or multiple projectiles through the pressure generated by the combustion of a propellant. This way, we exclude within this term the devices that launch projectiles by means of a pre-compressed gas. Some citizens in our country advocate in favor of the firearms possession because they strongly believe this will prevent a higher crime rate, when actually this is totally incorrect. It has been many years now since the United States is the leading country when it comes to crime rate. Our country has more than triple the amount of the second leading nation, and this is a clear sign that what we have been doing for so long is not the right thing. On the other hand, we can look at Australia, were in 1996 the government passed strict gun laws to control what type of firearms people could own. Also, the country required the citizens to sell to the governments any weapons made illegally, and since then Australia has not seen any mass shootings. Studies have also shown that less weapons lead to less crimes. For example, it has been proved that there exists a correlation between stricter gun laws and lower homicide rates with or without guns. Additionally, there is an article published in the Southern Medical Journal which shows that the existence of a firearm in a home is 12 times more likely to cause harm to the people living in the house and guests, rather than to an intruder.
It is more than clear now the fact that more guns do not equal fewer crimes. Therefore, I strongly advocate for more tougher
