Many authors write books about events, their lives and their environment,
and their corrupt government. One satirical author who wrote a novel about
living in a corrupt society is Jonathan Swift who wrote Gulliver's Travels.
The places the protagonist had visited reflected on the author's English
government. The life of the author will be shown similar to this book
because of the way he lived.
Jonathan Swift was well educated and graduated from Trinity College in
Dublin in English literature. He not only had a life in literature but also
had a life in politics. This experience helped him write many satirical
essays and novels against England and Ireland. His first political job was
to work for the remarkable statesman, Sir William Temple from 1689 to 1699.
During that time, he also became a minister for the church of England in
1694. After Sir William Temple died in 1669, Swift became a pastor of a
small Protestant parish in Laracor, Ireland. He was ordained in 1694. His
skill as a writer was greatly appreciated within the church and was well
known in Dublin. If one were to divide Swift's career into "periods," the
years 1710-14 would naturally fall into the "Middle Period."(Cook, V) In
1710, he became a powerful supporter of the Tory government in England.
Through many of Swift's articles and pamphlets in defense, he became one of
the most effective public relations men any English administration ever had.
The Tories saw how good Swift's literature was and hired him as an editor
for their journal, The Examiner. His political power ended when a new
government came to power. This was the Whig party. The Tory government and
the Whig party were against each other and shared different views like the
republicans and democrats in the U.S. The last stage of Swift's life shows
him transformed from an English into a Irish favorite, and this almost in
spite of himself.(Swift, XIV) He was betrayed and exiled to Ireland by his
friends. The unbearable lifestyle he endured while living in Ireland forced
him to write his brilliant satirical essay, A Modest Proposal. This essay
suggested that the people of Ireland should use their children for a cash
crop.
In the book Gulliver's Travels, the author reflects his life on the main
character to Prove a point, mankind are savages. All that was necessary
was that he take on a deliberate persona in the form some self-deceived
The documentary, “The Fresh Kills Story”, by Andy Levison, posted on vimeo.com and published in 2012, tells of the transformation of the world’s largest garbage dump into a environmentally friendly park. Fresh Kills began on April 16, 1948 in Staten Island, New York. Covering more than two-thousand acres, the area damaged the reputation, image, and scent of the community surrounding the garbage lot. Nearby residents explained the dump to give off a prison-like impression when they looked at the fences and trees lined with plastic bags and other garbage. Additionally, they noticed those who lived closer to the dump contracted more illnesses than usual. This was a result of harmful chemicals being released into the air
The definition of a utopia is an imagined place or state in which everything is perfect. In book four of Gulliver’s travels Gulliver discovers a group of people called the Houyhnhnms and the group displays qualities of a possible utopia. The Houyhnhnms are very rational in their thinking, and try their best to stay away from entertainment and vanity. However the Houyhnhnms could not be considered creators of a utopia because they emphasized unrealistic rules and because of their treatment of the Yahoo people within their society. Instead it is the Lilliputians people who display the most signs of a potential utopia in Gulliver’s Travels.
They criticized the social injustices that was going on during the 18th century in Ireland by doing what they loved the most, writing. Swift and Goldsmith wrote their stories as a mockery to the arrogance, hypocrisy, and falsehood of the upper classes. Through their bold and amusing tales, we are entertained with the obvious message of injustice and corruption decorated in a satire. Through their love of literature, Swift and Goldsmith, tried to better their society by displaying their discontent through countless satires. For both Jonathan Swift and Oliver Goldsmith, their love of literature began at a young age; however, their poverty-stricken lives prevented them from pursuing their dreams. Nevertheless, these dreams manifested into reality, and soon Swift and Goldsmith took jobs writing for the Tory. Jonathan Swift and Oliver Goldsmith had similar ideas, and because of this, took on similar writing jobs. Their love of literature persuaded each to join a Literary Club. Throughout the years, these two poets underwent great trials; however, their passion for literature never
...lity for what it is but also gives me motivation to either make the world a better place. Through his writings he gives us a choice that I feel is vital and has the abilities to distinguishes his readers from good and evil, the just and unjust. This is a form of writing in relation to all societies that I have never seen before and I feel that it is vital for all to read Gulliver's Travels so that they can look within themselves and see who they are as individuals. Overall, it is my opinion that Jonathan Swifts works on Gulliver's Travels exemplifies a true literary masterpiece. It gives us a true description of society and how we as individuals interact with on another. It tells us of our "corrupt lawyers, politicians, avaricious doctors, mass slaughters in wars over trivial pretexts-aspects of our experience as well as of Gulliver's and reminders that this narrative Gulliver's and his experiences implicates the reader in the moral problem of how to judge-and perhaps how to change-society. In all there is a lot to learn from these writing and tell us a lot about society and how we as individuals need to gain a better understanding our ourselves as well as society as a whole.
Ocean acidity will spoil marine ecosystems if it remains persistent. Preserving sustainable fishing industries will become unmanageable if the carbon dioxide absorbed by the world’s oceans is not considerably abridged.
Jonathan Swift, a writer in the 1700s, wrote an article entitled “A Modest Proposal.” In his writing, Swift proposes an idea that he believes will prevent the children of the Irish poor from becoming a burden to their parents and country. Throughout Swift’s article, he adopts an informative tone in order for his suggestion to be viewed as an actual solution to the poverty issue sweeping Ireland.
Chinese Philosophy not only is the fruit of thinking of the Chinese nation, but also is the important component part of world culture. In Chinese philosophy, there are three main parts: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Among them, Chinese Buddhism, which came from India, experienced a course of sinicization under the influence of Chinese traditional culture represented mainly by Confucianism and Taoism , so it keeps the general features of Buddhism ,and also formed its Chinese characteristics. The changes of Chinese Buddhism from "going out of this world " to "being in this world " and "building pure land in this world " fully manifested the humanistic spirit of Chinese culture. Both Chinese Buddhism and Western Christianity are religion, but in the realm of thoughts and culture, they are important symbols of Oriental and Western culture. This paper compares the two schools' philosophy of life, so as to explore the modern meaning and value from the mankind's common culture legacy.
A reason why schools should not limit students online speech is because of the violation of constitutional rights. We question reports of increasing threats to students online. The number of young people using digital technologies is increasing rapidly, problems online would also be expected to rise, simply as a result of increased use. ...ture the attention of the audience by means of “political pamphleteering which is very popular during his time” (SparkNotes Editors). The language and style of his argument is probably why it is still popular till this day. By using satire, Swift makes his point by ridiculing the English people, the Irish politicians, and the wealthy. He starts his proposal by using emotional appeal and as it progresses, he uses ethos to demonstrate credibility and competence. To show the logical side of the proposal, he uses facts and figures. By applying these rhetorical appeals, Swift evidently makes his argument more effectual.
The Buddhist brought with them the concept of multiple gods and Buddha’s “spiritual state to provide the power for humans to make the transition into death and the afterlife successfully” (Corduan, 2012, p.410). Confucianism brought the obedience of the child to the parent into Chinese mainstream life, plus the “social stratification and codes governing dress, actions and communication” (Corduan, 2012, p.409). Taoism introduced the balance of forces in harmony in spirits in the form of yin and yang, thus creating that balance of nature and humans (Corduan, 2012). Christianity influenced Chinese life both socially and economically by introducing the concepts of “love for one’s neighbor, self-discipline, and trust” (Lu, 2014, p.2) as both essential and beneficial (Lu, 2014). All of these together with the traditional Chinese religion, give the Chinese culture it’s popular religion
Jonathan Swift and Katha Pollitt, separated by 200 years, share a common interest in the welfare of people. Specifically, the two authors write of different experiences regarding the underprivileged women and children in their particular countries. While my experience might be limited in the environment of poverty personally, I have had some exposure to underprivileged youth and their families. My perception of poverty is based on attending both primary and secondary school in a depressed socioeconomic community filled with single mothers living in government funded housing on the north side of Houston. From my experiences, I have found that, while divorce can be damaging for children, the deterioration of family values in society doesn’t
Past the political satire and laughable motifs in the book Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, the purpose of this story is to show everything ignoble and tactless of the human species in general and that humans are truly disgusting. Also exploring the idea of a utopia. Swift uses the literary device of political satire to show how childish and ignorant human acts were. This is because during Swift's time in the eighteenth century, Britain was modernizing at this time. The reader follows the four narrative travels of the main character, Lemuel Gulliver. Each of the four voyages Gulliver has traveled to, is a different society that portrays one of the main ideals of the eighteenth century in Britain. The four places Gulliver has traveled to were Lilliput; being Gulliver's first voyage, Brobdingnag; his second voyage, Laputa; the third voyage, and lastly to the land of the Houyhnhms; being his last voyage and afterwards traveling back home to England. The experience from being exposed to these four societies has had a huge impact on how Gulliver now sees humans.
In the atmosphere carbon dioxide is chemically neutral, however when it dissolves in seawater it reacts with H2O to form a weak carbonic acid. Over recent years, oceans have become more acidic because of the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The acidity of the ocean is determined by the concentration of hydrogen ions which are then measured on a pH scale – where the greater the level of hydrogen ions, the lower the pH (Askins, 2008). As the pH of the ocean drops from the pre-industrial value of 8.2 to 7.8 by 2020, ocean acidification is predicted to have a great effect on the ocean. Many of the aquatic organisms are very sensitive to the acidity of water, and as a result there will be effects at all levels of the marine food web (Balch & Utgoff, 2009). The carbonate shells of marine animals for example can dissolve in acidic waters. Also coral reefs will also be impacted negatively by increased acidity in addition to the effect that warmer waters are already having on them (McCarty, Wolfenbarger,
China is officially an atheist country, a variety of religions and beliefs can be found. Confucianism and Taoism, plus Buddhism, constitute the so-called “three teachings”, philosophical frameworks which historically have had a significant role in shaping Chinese culture. The basics of this three beliefs are commonly incorporated into traditional folk religions. Chinese religions are family-oriented and practice of several beliefs at the same time is allowed.
When faced with adversity society often turns to satire to relieve the frustrations the people feel. One of the most widely known examples of satire is Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” Swift uses this work to vent his frustration with not only the governing bodies of 1729 Ireland, but also its residents. Swift discusses the possibility of ending Ireland’s famine and economic troubles by using the children of poor families as a source of nourishment for the workers. This suggestion although meant in a comedic way served a more serious role in displaying Swift’s and many others displeasure with the state of their nation. Swift uses many techniques to entice his readers and make his argument compelling. The serious tone and personal style of the essay lock in the reader 's attention, while the use of facts and figures serve to establish a false sense of seriousness within the argument itself.
