Guernseys vs. Jerseys

Did you know that Guernsey and Jersey cows are way different from the original breed standards? That may make no sense to most people, but these cattle have changed a lot over the years. Did you know that even though they are just “cows,” they differ in many ways? For example, did you know that Guernsey cattle used to be a small breed of cattle? People have been breeding them skywards for 50 years trying to make them a larger breed of cow.

Again, the Guernsey and Jersey are very different animals but have tons of similarities. For example the Guernsey normally has pink skin and “satanic” eyes. The satanic eyes are in reference to the rectangular pupil. And Jerseys have darker skin which appears to be a blue-black mix. They also have rectangular pupils, but the demonic, shivering effect is lessened because they normally have almost pure black eyes. Appearance is everything when it comes to the Guernsey and Jersey. Guernseys are gold and white, and Jerseys are solid shades of brown or black.

Even though appearance is everything, the milk is also an important factor. Guernseys are known as “Golden Guernseys” because of their color and rich, fat-filled milk, which has a surplus of beta carotene, which can help prevent certain cancers. On the other hand, Jerseys have a very high butterfat content, which is perfect for making butter. Their milk is also fairly rich before it gets processed. Most people, however, cannot obtain un-processed milk easily.

The Jersey cow originated in England in the late 1700's. They were bred in to existence by English farmers on the island of Jersey. And shockingly, the Guernsey cattle originated on the island of Guernsey, England. The Guernsey was first recognized as a breed in the 1700's. And originated some years before.

Both breeds of cows are excellent decisions when it comes to milking or showing. They both have their ups and downs and special perks, such as cancer preventing milk and high butter-fat content milk. From gold to brown, with satanic and non satanic eyes, these cattle have a wide range of appearance. And they may just be “cows,” but they are much more than that. Even if they were once small cows, they are still just “cows,” but that’s why they are so amazing
