Feminism is defined clinically as the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. By a less medical definition, feminism is a philosophy in which women and their contributions are respected. It is based on political, social, and economical equality for women ,and men in a few instances. Feminists can be anyone in the population regardless of sex, gender, or ethnicity.
Feminism is the belief in equal rights and opportunities, in organized activity, in support of women’s rights and interests, and also in the theory of political, economic, and social equality of the sexes (Merriam-Webster). Typically, the word “feminism” has a negative connotation associated with it and feminists are stereotyped as closed minded, man hating, ugly, and whiny, among many other things. However, these stereotypes are much exaggerated and while they may be true of some feminists, most are normal women who could not be picked out from a crowd. Modern day feminists are following in the footsteps of their ancestors who starting in the late 1800’s have participated in three major feminist movements (Stockton).
No one should be told they cannot do something because of their gender. The feminist movement is creating forward progression with creating equality. You do not have to be a woman to apart of it, men can want gender equality as well. With gender equality, everyone has equal opportunities. We can create gender equality all around the world by shrinking the wage gap, taking all rape accusations seriously no matter where or to whom they happen, and having woman feel they are just as important as any
Many people think that Feminism is a 21st century invention, when it has actually been around since the 1800s.The common misconception of Feminism is that its purpose is that women are better than men, when it’s completely far from it. Feminism is actually the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. (Feminism) Feminism first started by just trying to get women the right to vote but now it has developed immensely but we still have a long way to go. Feminism was vital for women to gain their freedom and independence.
Feminism is a belief or ideology aimed at achieving social, ppolitical and economic equality for women. This push for equaliity amongst the sexes has enabled women to earn equal wages, to sign contracts, to own property amongst much more in the economic field. On a more personal level, women have been given the right to control their bodies and have been given more protection from abuse. It would appear as if Stella, of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, is a victim of abuse from Stanley, however she isnt so much a victim as she is an enabler because she accepts the abuse and does little in the way of prevention or avertion.
White women had been oppressed, and eventually when America began to diversify, those coming into the country were becoming oppressed and alienated. Even those who had been in the country were being discriminated against, but it’s because white Americans were prejudice towards those who identified as other than white. Sexism was and is definitely prevalent within the feminist movement, as feminism is fighting for the equality between men and women in general. Sexism creates and justifies systems of domination based on sex and gender (FYS Class Notes). The feminist movement began on the acts of sexism, as women did not have the same rights as men. Today, I think that women still aren’t treated as equal to men because people, especially men, think that women aren’t capable of doing the things a man can. I also think that part of the reason that men think women aren’t equal is because women can have children, and they just assume that the woman is supposed to take care of that child for the rest of her life. Yes, it’s her child, but it’s also the man who helped her create the child’s responsibility to take care of the child as
Feminism objectifies the ideals of equality between a man and woman in a common culture or society. For a very long time, women have struggled to find common ground within the dynamics of male dominant cultures. Feminism is the advocacy of women rights in the political, social, and economic equality to men. One would think that as the political, social, and economic structures change, more women would gain more rights just as fair as those to men. Well that’s not exactly the case. For many years now, women still till this present day struggle to have equal rights as those provided to men. Women should be treated just as equal as any other human being, to be more specific, men. Women by now should have gained equal rights as those to men. But who is here to objectify that, men are.
In this case women are stuck where in no matter how they act or how they dress, they end up put into a label they do not necessarily belong in. The main goal of feminism is to create equality for women and fight against the labels put on them. Though throughout time feminism itself has been given a negative label. In today 's society women do not want to be referred to as feminists from fear of being labeled as a bitter man hating woman. This is definitely amplified in media today. Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, brings up the idea of the essential feminist and where it suggests,” anger, humorlessness, militancy, unwavering principles, and a prescribed set of rules for how to be a proper feminist woman” (169). This fear of being labeled a feminist not only comes from fear of being thought of as angry or humorless, but from being attacked for not being the “proper feminist woman”.
In an article written by, Gina Davis, she tells the story of how her boyfriend was verbally attacked in his college class by several women. Her boyfriend and his friend were the only males in the class. Davis believes in strong women but also states that she believes in a strong man. The topic of feminism came up in the class and her boyfriend said to the class that he likes opening the door for his girlfriend and taking care of her. The women in the class raised their voices at him and basically said they can do anything a man can do and they don’t need a man to take care of them. Davis’s boyfriend was trying to explain to all the girls that he would rather be chivalrous than to have his girlfriend do the same as him. In this particular college class, the girls were outraged (I Am A Female, 2016). Men try to be chivalrous but women are mad and say that they can change their own tire. If a man doesn’t open the car door, it is a possibility that their girlfriend will become frustrated. This leaves some men
“Feminism begins with the premise the at women’s and men’s positions in society are the result of social, not natural or biological factors.”(ppt, slide 9) This quote helps establish the definition of feminism, which is that women’s and men’s ideas and concerns should be treated as equal. That quote is from an influential feminist writer bell hook. She grew up in the south were young black girls were not encouraged to speak. This was so greatly instilled in her that she decided to write her books using a pseudonym so that she could have an identity where she would be able to write and not go back to silence. To break her silence she had to be defiant with her speech, which lead her to become an independent speaker. Her literature is important because she wants to encourage woman to speak so that their audience wants to take action, which is the definition of feminism. Likewise Hull and Smith wrote about the struggle of black women and the struggle for them to get any rights or recognition. For example Milla Granson was a black slave who leaned from her white master, and instead of ke...
