I must admit I really like Greys Anatomy. I love how you used Greys Anatomy for the discussion board. It really helps me put into perspective what we are learning in psychology. I think double-blinded experiments are great. I remember watching a movie about a double blinded study, and it was intense, I remember both parties figured it out and they wanted out of it and couldn’t. Now, that I have better understanding of psychology, and some of its theories and studies. Thank you, for helping me better understand some of chapter one. I enjoy reading other people’s views are on psychology and how they can relate to it somehow.

Upon analyzing his experiment, Stanley Milgram, a Yale psychologist, concludes that people will drive to great lengths to obey orders given by a higher authority. The experiment, which included ordinary people delivering “shocks” to an unknown subject, has raised many questions in the psychological world. Diana Baumrind, a psychologist at the University of California and one of Milgram’s colleagues, attacks Milgram’s ethics after he completes his experiment in her review. She deems Milgram as being unethical towards the subjects he uses for testing and claims that his experiment is irrelevant to obedience. In contrast, Ian Parker, a writer for New Yorker and Human Sciences, asserts Milgram’s experiments hold validity in the psychological world. While Baumrind focuses on Milgram’s ethics, Parker concentrates more on the reactions, both immediate and long-term, to his experiments.
Gregory Berns completed an experiment that tried to find an answer to Solomon Asch’s questions by using M.R.I. scanners to look at the brain while the subjects were under social pressure. The researchers found that standing up for one’s beliefs showed up in the part of the brain involving emotion, which suggests that there is an emotional dilemma that comes with going against the group. But social conformity, on the other hand, shows up in the part of the brain dealing with perception, which shows that “seeing is believing what the group tells you to believe” (Blakeslee 2). Or in other words, other people’s opinions of an answer can lead to clouded judgment when perceiving things on your own. Although this experiment only utilizes one other variable, the MRI scanner, it shows how psychologists will use different variations of an experiment to see what is really causing an issue. Our sample consisted of 43 undergraduate psychology students in a Learning and Cognition lab (Psy A355L) at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The participants were adults, but data was not collected on age, sex, or any other demographic. All the students provided their consent and time, in exchange for 15 points in the class. The ethical principles of the American Psychological Association were followed in this human experiment (American Psychological Association, 2010).
This is done well, but it also shows of course a rather biased view of the situation. In the only interview mentioned, we find an unflattering portrait of a person who stopped the shocking experiments. Nothing about the descriptions present him in a positive light, and we eventually figure out that he stopped the experiment out of fear for his own heart. The reader is then left to draw their own conclusions. Reasonably, one can assume that the reader reaches the idea that most people don 't help others out of altruism, and that this experiment reveals a dark part of the human psyche and soul. However, the experiment is at it 's root flawed by both cultural and authoritative expectations. As the author goes on to say in later chapters, there is a very high chance that if two people are alone in a expectation-less environment one will help the other. As a contrast, in this experiment most people assume that the scientist, the only person with the full knowledge of what is going on, knows best. And why wouldn 't they? Most people trust doctors to give them shots, and if they hear someone having a fit, they can be relatively assured the doctors will take care of it. They would not shove the doctors aside and attempt to help by themselves, because they would default to the person with the most knowledge about the situation to make a thoughtful and informed
Human behaviorist’s have long studied changes in people’s behavior as it relates to obedience in authoritative relationships. Two of the most renowned obedience studies were conducted by Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo, in which they each tested reactions to authority using important variables that were manipulated throughout their experiments. However, some psychologists, like Dina Baumrind, a psychologist for the Institute of Human Development, believe experiments that test humans impetuous reactions should not be conducted unless the subject is well-informed of the purpose. Baumrinds, “Review of Stanley Milgrams Experiments on Obedience” criticizes the accuracy of Milgrams study and further explores the emotional response those submitted to testing inadvertently experience. While other psychologists, like Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University, believe even experimentation with known factors can produce the same psychological effect, as seen in Milgrams experiment. As Zimbardo notes in “The Stanford Prison Experiment”, even the voluntary role-playing of his study on obedience had a large impact on the subject’s mental-health, proving that Baumrind remains bias with her argument. While both Baumrind and Zimbardo care for the well-being of the subject during and after the experiment, Baumrind argues that all research, like Milgrams, must be conducted with consent of the subject, whereas Zimbardo views all types of experiments are crucial for developing human insight toward obedience to authority.

The practice of researching human behavior, which dates back to most ancient civilizations, has become better understood and more effective over time. This research led to modern psychology and has become increasingly broad since the first notion that one person could observe and measure the reasoning behind another person’s actions. Researchers in the field can study psychology as a whole or one of the various sub-disciplines that psychology breaks down into. These sub-disciplines range from the psychology of learning to fringe theoretical psychology. The men and women who conduct studies in the psychological field, referred to as psychologists, continue research in their sub-disciplines to add to the knowledge of the community. Psychologists focus on the study of the mind while clinicians treat individuals that suffer from psychological disorders. Now that I have covered psychology’s growth, I will move on to the ways that psychology currently impacts the world.
This chapter focuses on David Rosenhan and his experiment on determining if psychologists can correctly diagnose patients in a hospital setting(sane vs insane). Rosenhan was inspired to embark on this experiment after hearing from his friend that many soldiers tried to avoid the Vietnam War draft by faking mental illnesses. This experiment was centered around Rosenhan and how he recruited eight of his friends as pseudopatients to take part in this experiment in where the pseudopatients faked their way into a hospital during the month of October. Before the experiment, the pseudopatients practiced faking symptoms and pretending to consume medications. Furthermore, all of the pseudopatients possessed the same symptom of pretending to hear a voice in their head making a “thud” sound, but once they enter the hospital, the voice disappears. The voice for each of the pseudopatients matches the sex of the patients themselves. When Rosenhan went to the

Physician-assisted suicide refers to the physician acting indirectly in the death of the patient -- providing the means for death. The ethics of PAS is a continually debated topic. The range of arguments in support and opposition of PAS are vast. Justice, compassion, the moral irrelevance of the difference between killing and letting die, individual liberty are many arguments for PAS. The distinction between killing and letting die, sanctity of life, "do no harm" principle of medicine, and the potential for abuse are some of the arguments in favor of making PAS illegal. However, self-determination, and ultimately respect for autonomy are relied on heavily as principle arguments in the PAS issue.
The notion of truth is explored in everyday life as well as constructed through theoretical situations such as television dramas. Through the exploration of the representation of certain topics concerned with psychology the notion of truth can be explored ultimately answering the question “How is the notion of truth portrayed?”. Although “Grey’s Anatomy” is known for its scandals, and medical plot, there is also a fair amount of psychology involved in the characterization, and in the cases in which the doctors are involved.
