Many religions and gods were around at the time of Paul, two of which are Greek and Roman religions. Even though these were two countries with separate religions, the Roman religion came from the Greek gods. There were aspects, such as the names, that were different, but they still originated from the Greek gods. Greek gods were an important part of Greek mythology. They were around all the way back before Christ. Most of them still existed at the time of Paul. The highest Greek god was Zeus. He was the “Lord of the sky and supreme ruler of the gods”1, only after he overthrew his father, Cronus. After he overthrew his father, Zeus and his brother drew lots to see who would win and he won. His weapon was lightening, which he used against those that defied him. His wife was Hera, but her patience was tested because of his many affairs. Zeus was the lord over all weather and all gods. They are only two of twelve main gods. All of the gods were somehow related to Zeus. They were either siblings, spouses, or children of Zeus. Zeus as four siblings: Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, and Hera, who is also his wife. Poseidon is the ruler of the sea. Hades is the ruler of the underworld and the dead. Hestia, a sister, is the goddess of the hearth or home. Hera, his wife, is the protector of marriage. Hera spent most of her time protecting her own marriage with Zeus by punishing the women that Zeus went after. Zeus had seven children, three daughters and four sons. Ares, a son, was the god of war. Athena was the god that did not have a mother. Apollo, a musician, archer god, healer, god of light, god of truth, was a very busy son of Zeus. Hermes was a son that wore wings on his sandals and his hat. Hephaestus, an ugly and deformed god, was the god of Fire. Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty.
