Computers can be considered the eighth wonder of the world. Their use has become indispensible in every field – Communication, Database Systems, Banking, Robotics, Medicine, Vehicular Systems and what not. The World Wide Web and Internet has brought a new revolution across the world bringing the people closer through a plethora of networking applications such as chat, video conferencing, social networking and e-mail. When my father brought the first computer, a Pentium 3 processor, I was so amazed seeing the GUIs of the websites and the Windows have always attracted me. I thus developed a predilection to Web designing at school level where I was introduced to Microsoft Frontpage, HTML and Visual Basic. I was a consistent learner and one among the toppers in high school securing 89% in my tenth. In my twelfth, I secured a centum in Mathematics with an overall aggregate of 93%. My passion for Mathematics and inquisitiveness about Computers made me choose Computer Science as my major in B.E. degree at Easwari Engineering College, a reputed institution, affiliated to Anna University. Technologies advance so quickly that it seems no sooner has one technology become widely accepted than it is replaced by something newer and superior. Technologies in the field of web design are no exception. As web-related hardware and software components became faster, more reliable, and easier to use, the web exploded with new websites which led to a dramatic increase in web usage around the world.
Ms.Amarachinta was born in India, the country that is famous for its developed information technology industry. In 1992, she went to college and studied as an undergraduate in India. Guided by a family member and seeing the great need for computer engineers in the future, Ms.Amarachinta decided to take computer science as her major. During that time, internet just appeared in people’s lives as a new invention. There were no social networks, no smart phones, none of those technology products people use today existed at that time. “When I first started [using the internet], nobody used it for entertainment as people do today. The only form of electronic communication was through e-mail, even that was not common in students with other majors”, said Ms.Amarachinta. In fact, it is nearly impossible for anyone who lived in 1990s to imagine the popularity of social networking today; similarly, teenagers who grew up with electrical products could hardly understand the old way of life people used to have. The advancement in technology
Computers were in development from as early as the 1950’s, but the general public wouldn’t hear of the World Wide Web until the 1980’s. By the year 2000, the internet was accessible to the general public from their home computers. It was used mainly for e-mailing, online shopping and research, but with its growing popularity, the World Wide Web was quick to expand its content. We can now, in the present day, access the internet on a number of platforms such as mobile phones, laptops and PCs, and even Smart Televisions, which makes a vast difference to the platforms people used 30 years ago.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the importance of using technology in almost all aspects of life. As a consequence, individuals need an ideal way to interact effortlessly with computers. Galitz (2007) states that human computer interaction (HCI) is the method of how computers and human work and understand each other. One of the most important type of HCI is a graphical user interface (GUI) which is a computer software which makes the using of computer easier (Senta, 2013). It is evident from the name of this term (GUI) that the users are main aspect and they need to see their needs are achieved when they want which is the term of what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) (Galitz, 2007). This essay has been divided into two parts. Firstly, it will discuss that there are some principles which can make a successful GUI, namely the clarity of using it, performing user’s requests effectively, forgiveness of user’s mistakes and the object’s familiarity for users. In the second part, Apple’s web page will be evaluated as an example of a popular GUI based on those characteristics and it will also show that although Apple’s GUI has some weaknesses, it can be considered a good GUI because it has almost accomplished the other principles of the successful GUI.

Since the development of the Internet in late 1980s, communication has changed enormously. The Internet has altered the lives of people in the world in a way that was never imagined before. As little as a decade ago, if someone tried to explain the Internet and World Wide Web, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to understand. Computers were just beginning to become popular and few individuals realized the capacity of one PC, let alone the power of a network of electronic technology. By linking together computers, users could remotely access others on the network, share information, and send electronic mail as easily as pushing a button. Millions of people with shared interests, exchange information and build communities through Web sites, email and instant-messaging software.
