Democracy has been the root of a limited government, the system of which government powers are distributed so that one group of leaders do not have too much influence. The limited government has been structured to keep peace amongst all parties that are involved in the government. And under the U.S. Constitution, citizens are given ultimate power by their right to choose their representatives through the democratic process of voting. Each levels of the government are limited as they have their own responsibilities. Then there is the state government which are responsible for governing affairs within their borders, and carrying out federal laws and programs at the state level. They are governed by their own constitutions and retain any rights that the U.S. Constitution does not exclusively grant to the federal government. The state government is limited as they cannot form alliances with other states and must honor and respect the laws and institutions of the other states. And finally there is the federal government which is the central and highest level of government in the U.S. It is divided into three branches and each branch has its own rights and power to check and balance the powers of each branch. The federal government has the power to regulate taxes, establish federal welfare programs and make laws in the interest of the nation as a whole. An example would be a politician who managed to get a major bridge built in their district let the bridge be named after themselves. It would be also a congressmen’s desire to be seen as the cause of benefitting constituents mutually helpful. For candidates who are trying to win an election, the “image” or impression they give has been very important in politics. And through credit claiming, the image of the candidate would definitely give an impact to the people to vote for them. First impressions are extremely important as it is the factor of success or rejection. It shows the personality and how it can come across to voters. Politicians are aware of how the public views them and take years to build trust, make connections, and establish a vision for a community. However, one negative comment or distrustful action can destroy the foundation. There has to be an image of confidence, in order for citizens to trust politicians. As body language plays a significant role in public communications, it delivers a level of comfort leading the public and the standings of their ideas. Politicians must also keep calm in high- pressure situations, such as debates. Strong images must be kept whenever the public’s attention is on them, as every word and movement matters. The Constitution of the United States set up an intricate government with a very brief document. The Constitution is actually shorter than this essay, but was still able to set up all of the procedures that make our government act so slowly today. One process that takes an especially long time is passing a bill to make a law. Every governmental action has to be put into writing and then passed by the Congress and the Supreme Court. Limited government is a political system in which legalized force is restricted through delegates and enumerated powers . The constitution itself starts with “We the people…” the people who should and mostly do have the power. Limited government allows people to have the power over government by having elections, checks and balances in a system, and federalism. All entities that help the people stay in control of their nation, a nation founded on limiting government, from the Articles of Confederation to our modern day constitution.
There are three levels of government in the U.S. Local government (city/county), state government, and federal government. Here I will pay most attention to the federal government. Theoretically, in a Federal system the sovereignty is shared between the national government and the local government but the ultimate sovereignty lies on the people. The federal government does not have the power to be involved in the states laws as they are only able to deal with national security, taxation and foreign affairs. The States however, deal with public welfare, education and justice. Totalitarian regimes take over control of every aspect of an individual's life in which the state holds total authority. The only thing Totalitarian regimes do for its community is cause the basic rights of humans to be destroyed by brutality and terror. The Totalitarian society of any regime is constantly moving toward some end goal, even though the totalitarian state never reaches it. It instead creates the illusion of doing so. As soon as one goal was reached, it was replaced by another and such was the case in Stalin's Russia.
National, Local, and State governments work together cooperatively to solve common problems rather than making separate polices. They work more on an equal level to get things fixed. This type of federalism is hard to tell where one type of government ends and the next one begins. National and state governments are independent and interdependent with an overlap of functions and financial resources. It is difficult for one to accumulate absolute power with this type of federalism.
Many similarities can occur between the state and federal governments. State governments function like miniature federal governments. They have legislative, judicial, and executive branches,(although the three branch structure is not required) and they both go through many of the same law-making procedures. The United States is comprised of Federal and State governments. The Federal Government is located in the District of Columbia where it is run by three branches, the executive branch, legislative branch, and the judicial branch. The State Governments are structured in a way that emulates the Federal government, except there is one for each state and located at the state capital. The Federal Government controls all 50 states and their governments under the Constitution. State Governments, on the other hand, are responsible for governing their selective state under their individual constitutions, for the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution enables the State Government to have powers that are not clearly stated in the Constitution. (Tenth Amendment ) Though these two governments parallel one another, there are differences in the internal mechanisms of how their three branches execute, and also in the way laws are initiated when the Federal Government establishes a federal law onto the states.
The question of why understanding the American government is important to me as an individual made me pause and really think about the answer. I believe that by understanding the government and how it works it allows me to better understand my place in society and how I can make an impact, whether it be in my career or otherwise. Before I took this class, I use to believe when people would say that one vote does not matter. Now, I know for a fact that one vote does not matter, but when you can get a group of votes together those votes matter. Image is extremely important in society, where as much emphasis has been placed on the physical appearance as it is the easiest way to form an opinion about something or someone. Judgments and opinions are often placed on people based on how they look, act, dress, behave, or simply how someone presents themselves. Popular arenas where image has and continues to be influential, are in the schools, politics, and the media as well as many others. Putting forward a good image can be quite challenging for those people who are dominant public figures. Nevertheless, maintaining a good image for many people have been worthwhile as it provides them with opportunities, create relationships, business ventures etc.
