People like Poe use gothic techniques to obscure everyday objects. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” there is a ghost twin. “While he spoke, the lady Madeline (for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread--and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings. A sensation of stupor oppressed me, as my eyes followed her retreating steps.”(The Fall of the House of Usher) The above quote from the text tells us that Madeline is a ghost. She has come back to haunt them for burying her alive in the tomb that was placed inside the dark bleak basement. Edgar Allan Poe’s story of “The Black Cat,” has a definite doppelganger. “What added, no doubt, to my hatred of the beast, was the discovery, on thre morning after I brought it home, that, like Pluto, it also had been deprived of one of its eyes.”(The Black Cat) In the story the new cat had one eye, and was also black, just like Pluto. The smell as you would step right outside of the house was that of rot, and decayed trees. On the mansion itself there are many cracks and plants overtaking it. In the “Pit and the Pendulum,” Poe uses descriptive words to describe the setting of the cell. “I longed, yet dared not, to employ my vision. I dreaded the first glance at objects around me. It was not that I feared to look upon things horrible, but that I grew aghast lest there should be nothing to see. At length, with a wild desperation at heart, I quickly unclosed my eyes. This is because the cell(pit) has no windows entering it. The setting of any story is the most important part because it helps paint a picture in people’s heads as the story plot starts to come
Poe creates a dark and tense atmosphere in the Pen and the Pendulum by starting the book out with the narrator receiving a death sentence from the court for an unknown crime. Poe uses a lot of suspense in this story. In the Fall of the House of Usher his atmosphere is gloomy and dark. By making the atmosphere like that, this creates imagery so vivid to the reader which helps lead to a sense of emotion while reading this story.

When comparing the stories “The Fall of the House of Usher” written by Edgar Allen Poe and “The House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar. The setting in both are in a creepy, big house with a gothic style to it, which makes it more creepy. Both of the authors were a dark and demented type. Both in their stories have a big, empty house with a few people in them, with either kids that are living alone or with grandparents. Also both stories have a sense of having something under their sleeve to hit us with.
The narrator in "the House of Usher" was actually the friend of the main character of the story, Roderick Usher, who lived with his sister in the house and both had mental sicknesses that had ultimately led to their deaths. While the house was not actually haunted, as horror stories usually are made up of, there was a permeating sense of decay about the building that continued up to the two owners of the house, with their depression and gloom, and the sister's ability to withdraw in a catatonic state that would make anyone unaware of the condition conclude that the person had died. Poe displays his horror short stories, in which the reader can differentiate his signature style. Although many of Poe’s significant works may have a similar theme, the reader can distinguish the themes through the characters in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Tell-Tale Heart.”
One great American Gothic story written by Poe is The Tell Tale Heart. What makes this story Gothic/creepy is how the narrator describes the old man 's eye. Also the fact that the narrator is constantly thinking of killing the old man because of his eyes. Then again he still wants the reader to believe that he is not insane for having these thoughts. And that he has a legitimate reason behind his own crazy reasoning. In the first paragraph of page 41 of the story he says “True! Nervous very very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that i am mad?” then later he goes on to say “I heard many things in hell. A few of his most famous short stories are “The Raven”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Tell-tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, “Eleonora”, and “Annabelle Lee” (Book Rags).
