Architecture in Melbourne is thriving with creativity, new buildings such as the Manchester Unity Building, Capitol Theatre and Century building, which are all located on Swanston Street in the Heart of Melbourne. There are also other Modernist commercial building in Melbourne, such as the Myer Emporium and Yule House. Not all of these buildings are in Melbourne’s centre, there are many which are in Melbourne out skirts, for example Percy Everett who designed the Technical School in Essendon which opened in 1939. The Manchester Unity Building, built in 1932 and designed by Marcus Barlow, was the tallest building in Melbourne in 1932. This building was built between and brings a cosmopolitan style of building to Melbourne, this building was also inspired by the Chicago Tribune building (built in 1927), and was built in the midst of the Depression, this building was being worked on 24 hours a day, workers would work 8 hour shifts a day to get the building complete. It is themed as a Gothic Skyscraper as it contains similar aspects of medieval Gothic architectural features such as buttresses connecting the tower to the building. This building was also the highest building of the time, it was near on 132 feet high, the maximum limit of the building height, although in addition to this height the parapet which adds another 78 feet to the overall height. It also features many new exterior features such as terracotta tiles for the facade, fireproof concrete and it features over 10,000 panes of glass to create 900 windows, some of which are double glazed. Percy Everett also designed the Camberwell Court House Complex, which is very similar to the Essendon Technical School, it showcases a very European like Influence with its range of geometric shapes and large windows, much like a Bauhaus design from Germany. Much like the Essendon Technical School it also uses the same brick colours which are Everett’s colour scheme of red and brown bricks, in this case, the court house complex has no large windows like the Technical School.
