Architecture in Melbourne is thriving with creativity, new buildings such as the Manchester Unity Building, Capitol Theatre and Century building, which are all located on Swanston Street in the Heart of Melbourne. There are also other Modernist commercial building in Melbourne, such as the Myer Emporium and Yule House. Not all of these buildings are in Melbourne’s centre, there are many which are in Melbourne out skirts, for example Percy Everett who designed the Technical School in Essendon which opened in 1939. There is much modernist
The Manchester Unity Building, built in 1932 and designed by Marcus Barlow, was the tallest building in Melbourne in 1932. This building was built between and brings a cosmopolitan style of building to Melbourne, this building was also inspired by the Chicago Tribune building (built in 1927), and was built in the midst of the Depression, this building was being worked on 24 hours a day, workers would work 8 hour shifts a day to get the building complete. It is themed as a Gothic Skyscraper as it contains similar aspects of medieval Gothic architectural features such as buttresses connecting the tower to the building. This building was also the highest building of the time, it was near on 132 feet high, the maximum limit of the building height, although in addition to this height the parapet which adds another 78 feet to the overall height. It also features many new exterior features such as terracotta tiles for the facade, fireproof concrete and it features over 10,000 panes of glass to create 900 windows, some of which are double glazed. The structure of the building is made from Steel girders which were numbered and then encased in concrete. Only 5 percent of materials used for the interior and...

...material and can also offer an interesting texture. The Technical also features Percy Everett’s trademark colour scheme, red and brown bricks.
Percy Everett also designed the Camberwell Court House Complex, which is very similar to the Essendon Technical School, it showcases a very European like Influence with its range of geometric shapes and large windows, much like a Bauhaus design from Germany. Much like the Essendon Technical School it also uses the same brick colours which are Everett’s colour scheme of red and brown bricks, in this case, the court house complex has no large windows like the Technical School. These two designs not only feature some of the Bauhaus and other European design traits but are examples of “Moderne” design. http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/everett-percy-edgar-10136 vhd.heritage.vic.gov.au/reports/report_place/1681

Taller than the ancient pyramids in Egypt, large enough to hold the statue of liberty. 100 pounds of weightless stones, heavy enough to hold the Empire state building are the Great Cathedrals (PBS, 2011). Intrigued by the beauty in structure but puzzled by the very construction, without technology for building purposes has researchers mind wondering. In reference to the NOVA program, building of Gothic cathedral begin as a race of height, which over time this plan backfired because of the recent architectural discoveries in the foundation. The NOVA program pointed out that in this race of constructing the tallest building wasn’t the only concern between two rivalry cities in Europe; it purpose was recognized as a scared space for spiritual reasoning to bring ordinary someone closer to God (PBS, 2011).
The British Government faced a huge shortage of housing following World War II. As a result, the government began to see high-rise buildings as a solution to the nearly 4 million houses that had been destroyed. Metro Central Heights is Goldfinger’s first tower block structure. Metro Central Heights has become one of Goldfinger’s most iconic works and received a Grade II listing from the UK government. The irony of the Metro Central Heights is that it was originally called Alexander Fleming House, who shares a last name with one of Goldfinger’s biggest opponents for 2 Willow Road, Ian Fleming. Yet, unlike Willow Road, Metro Central Heights gave Goldfinger great prominence and praise. Completed in 1963, the structure is now a group of residential buildings in Southwark. south-east London. Originally, when Goldfinger was given the job to create a structure in Southwark, the purpose of the building was not yet known but was ideally to become a multi-story office complex. Goldfinger described his design in three main components, “the permanent structure; the much less permanent services and an even more fleeting component, the human requirements.” These thoughts highlight the lack of knowledge on the eventual use of the building. Thus, the interior design of the building was created to be as flexible as possible, providing open decks that would be divided accordingly. The design received praise from the
In this essay I will discuss what I’ve learned about Australian architecture, a brief history, and most of all, a major influence to the Australian style, Harry Seidler. Australia is a country that has only been around almost 100 years, a short time compared to other countries like America that has been around for almost 200 years. With Australia being a young country, it’s easy to see that it is still discovering the Australian style. In 1890 the architect James Izett and Howard Joseland raised the question, ‘What, in the first place, must guide us in the development of an Australian type (Johnson 1980, p. 2)?’ Both seemed to believe that climate was the answer. Another man named James Green thought that public and urban buildings should be seen as one style and domestic architecture as another. A popular view was that the old, ‘conservative’ Bri...
When it comes to Southern Gothic literature, most authors that had written in this genres stories were younger such as twenty-one through twenty-four when the stories were created. Southern Gothic Literature has always been around and it will continue being around as long as it remains a popular genre. Now, what is Southern Gothic literature? It is a type of writing that was created in the south. The genre surrounds itself “on grotesque themes. While it may include supernatural elements, it mainly focuses on damaged, even delusional, characters”. (What Is Southern Gothic Literature? 1). The whole point of Southern Gothic Literature was to
In the early twentieth century the Modern movement of architecture and industrial design came about. This movement was a reaction to the change within society and the introduction of new technologies. The ever changing world and technology meant artists to evolve alongside the changing world and this kind of ‘industrial revolution’ that was happening. Modernists ideas have seeped into every form of design especially architecture and design. Although most modernists insisted they were not following any style in particular, their work is instantly

The Medieval period, which occurred in the years 401 until 1500, is a time in European history that fostered the development and widespread use of various architectural styles. Many structures built during this time still survive to this day, including St. Michael’s Church in Germany and Chartres Cathedral in France. Two of the most common and famous types of architecture during this period were the Romanesque and Gothic styles. Romanesque architecture borrows many of the same innovative engineering techniques the Romans used to build the structures of their vast and powerful empire, such as the rounded arch. Jackson writes, “In the eyes and judgment of the great masters of the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries Roman architecture was
The Glasgow School of Art was built by Charles Rennie Mackintosh from 1897 - 1909 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1897, Mackintosh won a competition for the design of the Glasgow Building. However, it was a difficult piece of land to build on because of the very steep slope. The front end is located on Renfrew Street while the backside stretched down the steep hill. The Glasgow School of Art is constructed primarily out of wood, iron, and glass. Inside, their are studios, a lecture theater, a library, and a director's office. Also, the building itself shows nothing which could be considered eclectic. In fact, the Glasgow Building is considered very progressive.
The Romanesque and Gothic architecture period both occurred during the Middle Ages with the Gothic period taking place during the later half. Gothic and Romanesque architecture were related in many ways, but they also contrasted in style too. Over time, masons began to test the waters and push the limits. They thought of new ways to add lighting and ways to allow more height to the building without it being to heavy and weak. Many of the reasons for the change in styles had a lot to do with society and the changes it faced. There was a greater intensity occurring in piety and literature. The Gothic style embodied this new urban society. Romanesque and Gothic shared similar characteristics, but Gothic architecture was a greater departure from its previous predecessor.
It is considered that modern architecture settle after the World War II around 1955, however there was numerous factors before this happened. Names like Wright and Richard Neutra or the Rockefeller Centre (1930) in New York are some of the clear picture to prove that this movement started before. Brazil was another country in architectural development in the spotlight. There is also to say that this pre-war Modern Architecture had its differences regarding to the post war. Nevertheless, there is to clarify that, there was not a big jump, there was a whole process and it began long before.
What is America Gothic? The American Gothic movement started around the same time as the transcendentalist movement. Gothic writers unlike transcendentalist writers believed that life wasn 't all rainbows and butterflies. They saw it as a cruel and sometimes menacing place. During this time Gothic writers wrote about the true evils and that even the nicest person could have some of the worse demons.
The essence of modern architecture lays in a remarkable strives to reconcile the core principles of architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. However, it took “the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification, to establish modernism as a distinctive architectural movement” (Robinson and Foell). Although, the narrower concept of modernism in architecture is broadly characterized by simplification of form and subtraction of ornament from the structure and theme of the building, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose; the visual expression of the structure, particularly the visual importance of the horizontal and vertical lines typical for the International Style modernism, the use of industrially-produced materials and adaptation of the machine aesthetic, as well as the truth to materials concept, meaning that the true nat...
There is one known very influential writing style called Gothic Literature. It is not only considered to involve the horror or gothic element but is combined with romance, superstition, women in distress, omens, portents, vision and supernatural events to name a few (Beesly). The history and beginning of this era is not well known. From a few writers came this writing style that has impacted the world. A famous artists known for this type of writing is a man named Edgar Allan Poe. He wrote many short stories and poems that include horror, gothic, and romance just mentioned.
Jencks believes “the glass-and-steel box has become the single most used form in Modern Architecture and it signifies throughout the world ‘office building’” (27). Thus, modern architecture is univalent in terms of form, in other words it is designed around one out of a few basic values using a limited number of materials and right angles. In...
