Good Wars: The Crusades

There have been wars throughout history. Wars that have been fought for many reasons. We consider reasons such as freedom, independence, and equality as defining “good wars”. Millions of people have died fighting in these types of wars. However, some wars were fought for purely selfish reasons. These wars seem to benefit only people who want the war. It benefits them usually by increasing political power and economic status. What we find in history is that there is no such thing as a “good war”, but instead wars in order to maintain power. Both the Crusades and the rise of ISIS seem to be only about the “good” reason of religion. Upon closer study, we see that it went from being about religion to about maintaining power.

The Muslims believed having beliefs about Allah, the universe, and humanity is a big concern for the people that are Muslim. Islam is teaching that there is only one God. The most important belief in Islam and the central point to their religion is that their is only one god which is Allah. Christians believed that they should follow the works of the lord and they should strive to be like him. It is amazing how a religion so popular was once disliked. For example Hill writes in his document “The knights templar were members of a religious military order of christian knighthood founded around 1118-1119 in Jerusalem... believed that since they were fighting for god they would be immediately sent up to heaven upon falling in battle” (Hill, Bryan). This quote was explaining how they all fought for Jesus at first because they believed that if they fought Jesus they would be sent to heaven immediately. The reason that the Crusades was a domino effect is because at first the Crusades was fought for religious beliefs but then they fought to maintain their power also for economic benefits. Document 6 explains what the templars were when the reading says “The templars were rich and influential and answered to no one but The Pope...” (Hill, Bryan, 2016). What both these quotes mean is that the knights templars were knights who did things for religious reasons and believed that they would get into heaven because of these good deeds and fighting in the Crusades, but then they gained fame, fortune and power, so they decided to stopped doing things for religious reason unless it was something to do for The
