Good versus Evil The question is are Roger, Jack, Simon evil or good. What are their actions driven by impulse or choice. Also if Roger, Jack, and Simon innocent if they are good or if their evil are the not innocent. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the characters’ levels of innocence to identify whose actions are good, and whose actions are evil. Throughout the book Simon is shown as a morally good character that doesn’t show signs of evil. Simon is always looking to help others for example “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back to the endless, outstretched hands”(Golding 967). When he does this it shows he will help when no one else will. Another reason why Simon is a good person is when he discovers that the beast isn’t real. All he wants to do is to inform the other boys of the news. A final thing that makes Simon good is when he helps Piggy find his glasses when Jack knocked his glasses off. Simon good but does is impulsive in his actions and doesn’t think things through. Simon actions are very impulsive in nature because he does not think things through before he acts. For example when Simon runs into the group of boys during their hunting dance it leads to his murder. He was thinking of what was going to happen. He just wanted to inform the other boys about the beast. He is also impulsive when he volunteered to go tell Piggy that he Ralph, and Jack would not be back home till before dark. He did this without thinking and he knew the other boys wouldn’t go because they didn’t have the courage to go alone back to camp in the dark. A final reason of two why he is impulsive is “Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shove... ... middle of paper ... ...er actions are based on choice and he is evil so therefore he is not innocent. Roger is not innocent throughout the whole book Lord of the Flies. He is not innocent one because he is one of the most aggressive boys in the book (source 4). Second he is not innocent he took apart of killing an innocent boy named Simon. Also he took part in an murder of Piggy’s. Being part of those two murders is a huge reason why he is not innocent. A final reason to when Roger is not not innocent is because Roger lost his sanity, and went crazy; he was mean and hurt most of the boys in some way. There was nothing Roger did that was innocent. In conclusion that is why Roger and Jack are both evil. Also Simon is ultimately good throughout the whole book. In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the characters’ levels of innocence to identify whose actions are good, and whose actions are evil.
