Good Intentions Ruined by Boring Topics
“I cannot believe that I got stuck with Rene Descartes for my Senior Project!” I said to Megan as we walked through the hallway to our ninth period class. Megan and I had been friends ever since the second grade, and often vented to each other when we were upset.
“Oh trust me, I feel really sorry for you,” she replied with a sympathetic grin. She however, had one of the best topics, Elvis. That couldn’t possibly be very difficult. I must admit, I was beginning to feel a little jealous.
A few weeks before our topics were assigned; we were instructed that our Senior Projects would be a lengthy research paper dealing with one of the top one hundred people of the twentieth century. I sat daydreaming of the people I believed would probably be on the list, beautiful movie stars and rock stars. My ideas of the one hundred most influential people of the century and The History Channel’s list of the most influential people defiantly shared different opinions.
I am sure that the other students in the classroom at that time shared the same ideas that I had. This would be our very last high school project, the very project that we’ve anticipated all year long. For this last assignment, I wanted to write to impress. I wanted to show not only my classmates, but also my corky English teacher just what I was made of. I wanted to write a paper so great, that for years to come, people could examine my writing as a “perfect example”. Those aspirations were completely lost when we were finally assigned our topics.
I remember the day well. It was a bright sunny day in late April. It was getting to the time of year when seniors began having meetings every week to discuss the upcoming class trip to New York City, class advisors were running through the blue-gray hallways to measure all of the upcoming graduates for their gowns, and the attitudes of all the students and even teachers were upbeat. The seniors especially were excited for the end of the school year. The bell to eighth period rang. We all scurried out of the lunch room like a herd of cattle.
The students could hardly sit still during penultimate period the day before the long Columbus Day Weekend. The school was gearing up for the annual pep rally held during the last period of the school day before the Columbus Day Weekend. Lots of Calvary Hill teachers would stick it to the students before long weekends and vacations by giving tests and quizzes, others would give up the instructional time and let the kids watch a movie. Peter didn’t test or let the kids waste time with movies, he structured the time with games of Jeopardy and other fun activities that kept the kids engaged and thinking about the content material, while still having fun. When the final bell rang, the students could hardly believe that the period had flown by. They gathered up their materials and headed for the door.
One might compare this to the grueling, tiresome and back-breaking efforts of writing a good essay. Many of us have been writing essays for a long time now. It is characterized by “resistance to maintaining body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height”, “intense fear of weight gain or being “fat”, even though underweight”, “disturbance in the experience of body weight or shape, undue influence of weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of low body weight”, and “loss of menstrual periods in girls and women post-puberty.”(NEDA) Among women on a range of 15 to 24 years old, AN has been proved to have 12 times the annual mortality rate of all death causes, and from premature deaths of anorexic patients, 1 in every 5 is caused by suicide, which gives a rise of 20% for suicide probability. Anorexia nervosa is a life threatening eating disorder defined by a refusal to maintain fifteen percent of a normal body weight through self-starvation (NAMI 1). Ninety-five percent of anorexics are women between the ages of twelve and eighteen, however, “…in the past twenty years, this disorder has become a growing threat to high school and college students”(Maloney and Kranz 60). Anorexia produces a multitude of symptoms, and if not treated, anorexia can lead to permanent physical damage or death.
My analysis over the development of my writing throughout this semester. I will assess many aspects of my experiences with English 1301 up to this point in the semester. I will explain the ways by which I have blossomed as a writer during this time. I will provide brief examples of my work to show what I am basing the evaluation of my writing on. What my conceptions of writing were, at the start of, the semester and compare it to what they are now. I will clarify how my work this semester reflects the concepts of writing and reading we have been working on and studying in class. I will tell about what and how particular reading assignments have been influential in my growth of creative ideas. Lastly, my interpretation of what it means to be a writer, and how my experiences this semester has influenced my opinion on writing.

School had just started; it was the fall of my sophomore year. I was excited about having new teachers and being able to boss around those little freshmen since I had finally lost that ridiculous title of “freshy.” Although one class did turn all that excitement right into knots in my stomach, it was English 10. Ugh I hated English, partially because I could never remember all those rules of writing, which I had just thought of as “dumb.” I figured, “Why would I ever need to know all them? Computers will be able to fix all my mistakes for me!” As I would soon find out, boy was I ever wrong. Surprisingly, class was going good; our teacher Mr. Mieckowski seemed to be a little weird and quite boring at times but all in all not too bad I mean who isn’t boring occasionally? He had a shiny head with very little hair and never wore long sleeves to class. He was also quite tall and skinny, so everyone had his or her own conclusion about Mr. Mieckowski’s personal life. A lot of the time this ended up being the topic of conversation for his students, along with his hatred towards icicle lights, white reindeer, and especially technology; the thing I loved most.
