Goals of CAM Education The primary goal of CAM is to ensure that health care providers are skilled to communicate effectively with clients about modalities and develop a sufficient knowledge-base about CAM in order to provide wise information. An emphasis on safety and potential risks and benefits should be the basic goal. Accepting a non-judgmental, supportive position about CAM can improve the therapeutic health care provider relationships. Health care providers should develop an approval for both the traditional theories and evidence-based data for CAM. The development of a curriculum and teaching are restricted by the many debates surrounding CAM, the lack of a recognized core curriculum, and the fact that most health care providers …show more content…
As this Practical nursing program is a standalone academic entity there is no need for congruency with academic subdivisions. The school’s mission is as follows: “The Practical Nursing program was established to help bridge this labor gap by ensuring a pipeline of highly educated practical nurses that are able to join the health team and contribute to meeting the total needs of the patient” (CANNJ, 2012). The mission reflects teaching and service, but does not discuss the research and scholarship …show more content…
The nurse needs to understand the importance of addressing the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the patient in and ever-changing, complex society. These principles provide the structural frameworks and foundations for the nursing curriculum. The primary building blocks for the curriculums are the holistic nursing model.
Rational for Course Design The course design is guided by the nursing programs curriculum which defines the expected learning to take place during a program of study in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes. It specifies the main teaching, learning and assessment methods and provides the learning resources required to support the effective delivery of the course. A syllabus describes the content of a program and can be seen as one part of the curriculum (Keating, 2011). A detailed course outline using the SMART acronym provides students with a clear focus on what is expected. At the course onset, the syllabus informs the student of expectations, promotes time management and provides methods of evaluation (McKeachie & Svinicki,
As a nurse, it is important to address the needs of a patient during care. These needs are unique to each individual and personalizing it, enable the patients to feel truly cared about. It is important to be educated about these needs as the patients and their families look to you as a guide; therefore, education on things w...
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goal for each. I will also discuss the plan I created in order to successfully meet my learning needs prior to becoming an RPN, and

The next step in the systematic process of concept analysis is identification of the antecedents (Walker and Avant, 2011). According to Walker and Avant (2011) antecedents are characteristics that must happen prior to the occurrence of the concept. The authors tried to identify antecedents of holism as an approach to the delivery of nursing care. Even though, Narayanswamy et al. (2004) had identified spirituality as a major antecedent, authors found it apparent that more than one antecedent are necessarily the aspects of holism. After a wide literature review authors have identified antecedents in reference to the patient and the nurse. Holism to occur in nursing practice, there has to be a provider and recipient of care. Holism in nursing practice takes place, when there is a buttress nurse patient relationship on trust and understanding. First, nurse should possess knowledge, expertise, intuition, and good communication and advocacy skills (Olive, 2003). Prior to the relationship and communication between patient and nurse, there has to be a need in the form of illness or disharmony for the patient; who posses the ability to enhance autonomy and self-empowerment (Povlsen & Borup, 2011; Buckle, 1993; Griffen, 1993; Owen & Holmes, 1993; Kolcaba, 1997; Cumbie, 2001). Lastly, patient and nurse must be in an environment conductive to caring (Burke et al., 2004; Dossey, 2001; Fernros et al. 2004; Hassed, 2004; Narayanasamy et al., 2004; Norris, 2001; Ormsby & Harrington, 2003; Tzeng & Yin, 2006). Identification of the antecedents of holism helps to provide depth and clarification about the attributes and also helps to portray the context in which the concept holism is used (Walker and Avant, 2011).
According to Orem, nursing science is a practical science, in that knowledge is developed for the direct purpose of nursing practice itself (Barbara, 2011). The goal of nursing science is to look for an understanding of the actual realities that are concerning to nurses and the nursing practice (Orem, 2001). We can do this through both research and producing scholarly articles. “Nursing science is the science of which knowledge is developed for the sake of the work to be done” (Barbara, 2011, p. 44). Without the nursing science as the backbone of nursing, the nursing practice would seize to exist, or at least have difficulty staying alive. Nursing science offers nurses the knowledge, skills and competency to develop order and direction in their nursing care (Malinowski, 2002). Models of case studies, rules and standards of practice along with the various
As I made my way through the nursing program, I witnessed my ideas and perceptions of the nursing practice and what nursing means to me change over time. By examining my Philosophy of Nursing assignment from first year, I can see that my current perspective on the nursing practice is similar to what it was yet has expanded as a result of being able to work alongside various Registered Nurses over the past four years. My philosophy of nursing has also slightly changed. Although my philosophy is still based on the nursing metaparadigm, that is nursing, health, the person, and the environment, I believe that my understanding of each one has evolved. Therefore, I believe it is crucial for me to further explore my current perspective on the nursing
The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. (ANA, 2010, p. 1) These “outline the steps that nurses must take to meet client healthcare needs.” () The nursing process, for example, is one of the things I use daily. Other examples include communicating and collaborating with my patient, their families, and my peers, and being a lifelong learner. I continually research new diagnoses, medications, and treatments for my patients. As a nurse of ...
Reflecting upon this term brings about feelings of joy, excitement, and sadness that this term is soon coming to a close. Throughout this paper I summarize my personal learning throughout the semester, clarify two nursing roles I have assumed throughout the same timeframe, reflect upon my experiences throughout the semester, and will bring about experiences that reflect my personal learning and development in becoming a professional registered nurse.
Nursing students at State University need better clinical experiences and better clinical sites. Clinical sites that have nothing to do or preceptors who don’t want to educate should be cut out and replaced with better sites. Ideally each clinical should allow nursing students to gain experience in critical skills and patient ca...
Taking everything in and questioning it gives a more well rounded and in depth knowledge to base each philosophy off of. The main purpose is to care for the individual and I believe holistic approach is a good way to do so. Holistic nursing places emphasis on both the environment and treatment of the patient to include patient’s uniqueness as human beings along with their cultural views, values, and beliefs. (Flagg, 2015). Nursing can be very broad. It is goal oriented to each patient so that his or her individual health needs are met. Some patients could benefit tremendously just by taking them outside to get fresh air or by just sitting down to talk to
...t preventative therapies which will help to keep people in good shape. These will benefit the entire healthcare system as a whole. It will reduce the expenditure of healthcare, as we will be looking at preventative measure taking precedence. I truly believe that evidence based CAM methods and humanistic approaches should become a part of the medical school curricula. This will make a big impact on healthcare in the future.
Holistic nursing provides a personal, caring, and respectful relationship between the nurse and the patient. Holistic nursing has concepts that allows the patient to feel like their values and opinions are heard and respected. This field of nursing focuses on open communication, alternative treatment as well as comprehensive care. All three of these components are attracting patients to get care in this field, when today’s health care is increasing becoming impersonalized. Holistic care is growing
As I reflect on my nursing education, I relieved that I have unexpectedly created a set of values and beliefs for myself, otherwise known as my personal nursing philosophy. I believe that the core of nursing is advocacy, knowledge, integrity and caring. The focus of nursing is on patient need and patient health. According to the (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017), “nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.” I believe that nursing is an art allowing the nurse to be competent,
There are five integral components to nursing practice that reinforce the framework of the nursing profession. The conceptual framework pillars are the following: Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism and Holism. Further, Caring is an essential pillar in the nursing profession and is defined as embracing empathy for the patient and being able to interpret the principles of altruism, integrity, human dignity, autonomy and reflect sensitive, compassionate, safe and outstanding quality care. Communication is s process in which information is shared formally or informally between individuals. Critical Thinking is extraordinarily acquired thought that indicates inquiry, evidenced based research, reasoning, analysis and decision making. Another pillar is Professionalism; this pillar is classified as a process that involves legal, ethical, political, competency and economic concerns. Finally, Holism is classified as the unity and completeness of a person; therefore, the mind and spirit of the body are persuaded by culture, education, religion, environment, gender, developmental stage, standard of living and interpersonal relationships. Accordingly, each pillar has a significant role in the nursing process, but Caring plays a crucial role in the nursing practice due to the fact the nurses need to connect with the patient in every aspect.
I believe that nursing should be a holistic approach, dealing with a patient’s body, mind, and soul. It is definitely a physically demanding job, but equally as important is the demand for emotional commitment. My past academic performance, as well as my personal qualities, provides the foundation for my career. A core characteristic of a successful nurse is teamwork and the ability to act as the liaison between the patients and the other members of the patients’ care teams. Besides working well in a team, it is also important to seek out help when necessary. Another vital quality is culture competency. Prosperous nurses understand diversity, and embrace and honor, rather than judge or ignore, what makes people different. Furthermore, critical thinking skills allow nurses to recognize possible patient problems. The intellectually disciplined process enables the nurses to respond to the constant changes and needs of a patient in their charge. Lastly, the nurse’s role has a zero tolerance for error where the smallest mistake may result in a life-threatening event. To ensure patient safety, it is critical to pay attention to detail and use caution no matter how stressed or overwhelmed a person might feel. These are the core qualities that I hope to attain as a registered nurse and important goals to adhere to for as long as I’m in this
