GMOs or “genetically modified organisms” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Most GMO crops today have been developed to resist certain insect pests. There are GMO plants being developed today to produce specific vitamins, resist plant viruses and even produce products for medical uses GMO is made by taking bits of DNA from different kinds of organisms and attempt to splice them together to get a new, better product. For example, tomatoes that are resistant to frost, canola, soybeans and wheat that is resistant to herbicides.
There are many people who are against or for the use of GMOs. My position is against the use of GMOs because they can be a risk to human health and safety. Since products that are GMO foods aren’t labeled, we are unknowingly consuming these products that might cause some people allergic reactions. For example, a study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine proved that individuals who were allergic to Brazilian nuts suffered the same allergic reaction when they consumed GMO soybeans that contained that Brazilian nut gene. In other circumstances, consumers who have allergies, avoid them. But, if GMO foods aren’t labeled with the source of the foreign genes, consumers won’t be able to identify these potential allergens. Second, studies have shown that pesticide-producing crops contaminate nearby streams. This affects our environment because it can possibly affect aquatic life. The BT ( Bacillus Thuringiensis) toxin made by these crops are much stronger than any found in nature and are made throughout the plant. ...

...hytate, decreasing the nutritional value of the plant.
Not only can GMO foods increase toxicity and decrease the nutritional value of a plant, but it can worsen the diseases we have now. Within nine years, the number of people with three or more chronic diseases nearly doubled- from 7 percent to 13 percent. Visits to the emergency room due to allergies more than doubled from 1997 to 2002. Also, since some antibiotic features are added to GMO foods, if we consume them, they persist in our bodies. This makes actual antibiotic medications less effective. This is bad because there is a chance that disease rates increase due to the fact of the antibiotic resistance, there is possibility that it can be harder to make new medical antibiotics since the antibiotic features added to the GMO foods that we may consume are resistant to certain diseases and viruses.
