Imagine you’re having a child. The doctors tell you that they are genetically engineering your unborn child to be stronger, smarter, and healthier. However, you aren’t allowed to know the process, or if it is safe for you or the child. Would you still do it? This is the problem we face today with genetically modified organisms or GMOs. Unlabeled GMOs in the U.S. are a danger to the free American body; they’re untested, undisclosed, and a product of capitalistic greed.
Collins English Dictionary defines GMOs as genetically modified foods are produced from genetically modified organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA via genetic engineering. They are also known as “bioengineered” foods. These genetically modified foods are modified …show more content…

Department of Energy, one of the pros of genetically modified crops is a better taste, increased nutrients, resistance to disease and pests, and faster output of crops. However, this isn’t true in all cases. GMOs are dangerous and not yet fully understood. Genetically engineered foods are not legally required to be tested for safety by the FDA. Not only are they not required to, but the FDA does not test them either. Jason Dietz, a policy analyst at FDA stated, “It’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the product is safe.” Also, the FDA spokesperson Theresa Eisenman stated, ”It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the [GMO] food products it offers for sale are safe…” The most detailed tests given are three-month long feeding trials on laboratory rats. The test may be too short to uncover pathologies that form more slowly. All testing is voluntary as long as the new product is not “significantly different” from its natural counterpart. Neil Degrasse Tyson argues that humans have been genetically modifying organisms for millennia. However, artificial selection is much different from bioengineered food in labs. Artificial selection is a slower, natural process that has existed since the start of life on Earth. It’s a process we know in and out. Bioengineering is still relatively new- we do not know quite how it affects us or the environment …show more content…

However, there still aren’t any regulations requiring this labeling. This is more often than not because they have not been thoroughly tested for safety, and it would be easier to question the corporations if we knew what was or wasn’t being done to our food. It also takes away our right to know what it is we are eating. We label kosher/ not kosher foods, meats/ vegetarian foods, and gluten/ gluten-free foods- why don’t we label genetically modified
