The book I chose to read for this book report was Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warning by Bjorn Lomborg. This book was originally published in 2007. Lomborg offered many perspectives on the subject of global warming and climate change, stating that it will cost millions and billions of dollars. However, even with the amount of work and money put into stopping the global warming problem, there may be little impact on the world. Lomborg argues that perhaps humans should start with smaller steps, such as fighting diseases or maintaining a safe, fresh water supply. Doing so could allow a lower death rate and fix the world on a drastic measure. The author believes that with a clear mind and an organized mindset, humans can potentially help the world become a richer and healthy environment. This book has many highlights that the author would like to share with the world. First, we hear many ominous and exaggerated stories of consequences that uses pathos appeal to convey emotional feelings that are not necessarily supported by data. For example, …show more content…
It is written such a way that he seems to be making fun of the politicians. Although it is not very entertaining, I liked the ideas that the author stated in order to provide new viewpoints on the situation. This book applies to the theme of Human and Environment Interaction in the geography field. It illustrates the connection between man and nature and how we must help nature to help ourselves and the environment. This interaction is how humans change their environment and how the environment changes them. For example, climate change is proving that the global temperatures are being changed because of pollution that humans have made and now humans are trying to modify their actions to help conserve the planet. In the future, humans may have to adapt to the higher temperature to survive with the
In order to better understand global warming it is important to understand the rising of the earth's average temperature, the man-made causes of global warming, and the ways that we can try to prevent it. There are many things people can do to help. These things can include using environmentally friendly products, lowering the production of carbon dioxide, and even recycling. Global warming is an impending and major problem for civilization, and if people do not start taking the threat of global warming serious there could be major implications in the future. Global warming can be stopped if people have the desire to stop it. If global warming is not stopped soon this Earth will be extremely different for future generations, and may lead to our demise.
The two essays by Michael Pollan and Curtis white talk about climate change in regards to the relationship between the environment and human beings. Although the two essays share the same topic, they take the subject and engage the readers in totally different points of views. Pollan’s essay talks about global and ecological responsibility being a personal virtue while Curtis discusses the socio-economic or political issues underlying sustainability (Pollan; White). These two essays are very different in terms of voice; however these pieces of writing are both important for people all over the world to read. Climate change and environmental disasters are a real issue. Just this year, there have been more storms, cyclones, earthquakes and typhoons all over the world. One cannot look at the state of many developing counties where the majority of the population is exposed and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This issue on developing a viable solution for the problem of anthropogenic gases and global warming is long from being found. Not only this, many people do not want to hear about this issue since they do not think it is real. Unless people have tangible proof that their cars, thermostats and aerosol cans are contributing to climate change, they are not going to give up their lifestyles. By synthesizing the two essays, one can see that there is a need for change and that it is not an issue which should be dealt with in terms of ecological factors or even personal virtue. The social, economic and political factors affecting this problem and the move towards real sustainability should also be a topic that will raise awareness.
Everything that the book talks in the first chapters are only a few of the reasons why the planet keeps getting warmer. People have heard in the news and read books about global warming, but most never paid much attention to any of it. The author David Archer emphasizes that all humans are adding climate change problems across the globe by just the simple fact of charging a cell phone. Most of the things we do to contribute to climate change are necessary in daily life, but people could definitely learn to save power or we could use the car less and help save us from weather
Over the years, global warming has gradually become a more renowned and controversial topic, some say Global warming has been incited by human activity, so humans should take action to slow down global warming, others say global warming happens naturally so there is no use of stopping it, while some others don’t even know Global Warming is happening. Many groups of people within different nations have different opinions of global warming correspondingly having various way of buffering the situation. The aim of my essay is to research and learn about the attitudes and actions of different nations about global warming, whilst giving knowledge to others to be aware of Global Warming and use innovative ideas to soften the intense situation Global
The first part of this essay discusses what the human species has done to deal with the problem of climate change. While some improvements have been made, the problem has not been addressed aggressively enough to stop the damage. What is amazing about this is the denial of so many people that problems exist. If they do realize the risks, they are simply not taking actions to contain the damage.
The global temperature of the earth has risen about 1.8° since 1884, and the amount of land ice is dropping by about 286 gigatonnes per year; these changes to our home planet are the result of our human selfishness and short sightedness. To save our planet, we need to act on a global scale and give up our luxuries for the sake of the whole world. Clearly, the most important thing in life is to take positive action instead of being passive.
Human geography as an academic discipline seeks to understand the interconnectedness of space, place and landscape over time, and in doing so it is primarily concerned with the relations between human beings and the natural world (Daniels et al., 2008). Subsequently, both human and physical geographies are inherently linked - human geography works to understand the effects of physical geographical changes, such as climate change, on humanity. It is this greater understanding of climate change and its social implications which can enable human beings to respond on a variety of local, national and global scales to mitigate or solve problems. Global warming, as many of us are probably aware, is the process of the earth continually heating, and there is great debate about what will result from this process. The concept of global warming was first hypothesized by a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius in the 1890s and has caused great debate in recent years (Weart 42). The major debate regarding the issue of global warming essentially revolves around whether the end results will be “good” or “bad” for the Earth. The media often portrays the effects of global warming as being eventually catastrophic for the future of humanity and the Earth. Even though this belief is correct to a point, it can also be said that there will actually be some good results from global warming. The effects
The growing global awareness of climate change has encouraged governments and corporations to take steps in preventing climate change, such as passing clean energy legislation (Obama’s plan in the U.S.), limiting deforestation (Brazil), reducing carbon emissions (E.U.), and working together as a planet to pass international laws and help counties that are still developing (like China and India) reduce their negative impact (National Public Radio [NPR], 2011). It is true that this future may take longer to show signs of momentum, however, progress in this movement is sure to be in a positive direction. Hopefully, this direction will include collaborative work to ensure that communities help in the fight against climate change, protection of plants, animals, and oceans, increased usage of alternative energy, and most importantly, encourage global mindfulness. Collaboration and a conscious choice to end climate change are all we need for a brighter, climate change free,
Background and Audience Relevance: There are always conversations about our planet. We see our earths glaciers melting, weather temperature rising, and pollution affecting our resources. But for some reasons we tend to look away. We should be more aware of this potential event and I’m here to inform everyone about what actually is global warming and the effects of it.
In recent years global warming has been on the rise. The importance of this issue is so that we as a nation can be aware of the drastic changes which are occurring rapidly around the world. Although there isn 't one set resolution to solve climate change, we must continue to carry out ways to put it to a halt. Some of the ways I believe we can cut this crisis is to stop polluting the manufacturing of toxic gases which is filling our environment with smog. If we all put our ideas and opinions in ways to prevent some causes of climate change, the world in which we live will be a better place. Instead of being a part of the problem we can be a part of the solution. Opposed to just humans, animals, and other species are affected as a result of
Our planet has managed to survive and thrive for about 4.54 billion years. In the last 2 million years we have caused enough damage and destruction to make our world “broken” beyond repair. We will not be able to get back the world we once had. The reason behind this is global warming, specifically, the increase of the global temperature due to the burning of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere. If we do not make the issue of global warming a priority in today`s society, our entire way of life will be at risk. There are many reasons why so many people believe global warming should be a concern. Thoroughly examined points include: scientific predictions, rising temperatures, human causes, drastic climate changes and animal adaptations. Though there are several points arguing how global warming should not be a concern, the reality of the matter is that it needs to be taken into consideration on a global scale before it is too late, as to do nothing would have devastating implications on humankind.
Climate change has been an extremely controversial topic in recent history and continues to create much debate today. Many questions concerning climate change’s origins and its potential affect on the globe are not fully understood and remain unanswered. What is climate change? Is climate change happening? Is it a natural cycle of the world or are there other catalysts involved such as human activity? What proof is there? What data correlations show climate change is accelerated by humans? How serious is climate change and how will it affect the future of our globe? What are we doing to address climate change? Should we really be concerned about climate change? Questions such as these have made climate change a very serious issue in today’s world and created the ideology of climatism. The issue of climate change has affected many different aspects of our lives and the world we live in. Policymaking, human activism, technologies, emission control, global warming, alternative energy sources and many other things have been greatly affected by the mania of climate change. This research report will present climate change in a light of common sense and rationality that will take a grounded discussion of the science behind climate change, global warming, human activity, and how the ideology of climatism has corrupted and driven the actions to combat climate change.
One of the most substantial problems in the world today is global warming. This gradual warming of the earth is in occurrence at an extremely slow rate but it is happening. Many scientists believe that as human’s work and release greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, it can become dangerous for the long lasting life of humans and our environment. “Unless we take immediate action, the impacts of global warming will continue to intensify, grow ever more costly and damaging, and increasingly affect the entire planet - including you, your community, and your family” (“Global Warming Impacts”). Everyone should be knowledgeable about global warming and the dangers that it brings to our planet. This essay will examine
Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the human species face today, yet the majority of the population does not pay attention to it. People are not aware of the dangers and do not care about it much because the main effects will affect the next generation and not themselves. Global warming is happening and it is the reason for changing weather and weather extremes such as earthquakes, floods and wildfires. Global warming is caused by societies lifestyle and these lifestyles destroy the environment and affect the whole world. The use of cars, trains, planes, as well as wasting energy for people’s entertainment has a price; this price is that society is in danger.
