As Christians today, we are told in our church that it is well to serve our community or if lucky enough, to go overseas to serve in a sometimes dangerous country. In today’s society, the need for help around the world is greatly increasing. The issue of AIDS in Africa has been present for years now and we have just started to find ways to help with that issue. Due to this enormous dilemma that has hit our hearts, programs such as IFSW (The International Federation of Social Workers) and Compassion International have come about to try there hardest in treating this fast growing and deadly disease. Another way to serve internationally is to become a Social Worker. The definition of Social worker is someone who wants to better the environment and community around their hometown or state. Just as there are many jobs here in America, there are as many or more out there internationally.
As discussed in the introduction, IFSW is one of the biggest organizations that deal with the job title of a Social Worker. IFSW stands for The International Federation of Social Workers. IFSW likes to focus on topics such as human rights and social justice. In their statement, they also promise great Social Workers who are trained professionally and in conjunction with helping as many communities and people around the world, they also pair up with about 90 other organizations including United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This organization shares a very similar mission statement with that of Compassion International. Compassion International’s statement states four different commitments. At the beginning of the semester, I did not know what the "Service Learning and Social work Practice" course mean. However, through the process, with the accompaniment of Professor Preeti Charania, I understood the course and noticed a lot of transformation in me through the semester. The following are some of the changes and growth I have seen in me from class readings, discussions, group works, and working with the Church World Service (CWS) agency.
Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. Those who choose social work as their profession do so for a variety of reasons. In general, they appear to be motivated by a combination of humanitarian and egalitarian values, and by a desire to understand how society works and how to make it better for everyone. Frequently, a person is motivated to become a social worker following exposure to injustice and oppression.(p.16.)
From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families. Other helping sciences like psychology offers clinical groundwork. However, I knew social work would be a better fit because of its focus and influence of persons-in environment perspective opposed to the more individualized psychological perspective.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has a historical mission of enhancing individual well-being, empowering all people with a focus on the oppressed and vulnerable while addressing environmental problems in living. Social workers strive for social justice, social change, service, the importance of human relations, integrity and competence. Social workers have a mandatory code of ethics provided by NASW in order to not violate any client and to fulfill the social work mission (NASW Delegate Assembly, 2008).
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
This paper will explore what the primary mission of social work as a professional means to me. Through self-reflection of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, I will delve into why I chose social work as a career, the type of social worker I want to become, and ponder what challenges and obstacles may impede my chosen path.

Social work practitioners can use the information from this study to document activities that MSW graduates engaged in relevant to cultural competency. The study will provide current and future social workers with specific details and strategies that they can employ to assist them on their journey toward culturally competent practice. In addition, this research study will offer examples of what social workers can do to build their knowledge, skills, and values.
Globalisation is a broad term that is often defined in economic factors alone. The Dictionary at merriam-webster.com describes globalisation as “the process of enabling financial markets to operate internationally, largely as a result of deregulation and improved communication.” Also due to deregulation on the financial market, multi-national companies are free to trade and move their businesses to areas where a higher return or profit can be achieved. New technology also enables companies to relocate to areas where labour costs are lower, for instance movement of call centre jobs from the UK to India.

The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles.
