Socialization in Television In our world everybody watches T.V. in order to fill time, entertain, or as a way to escape the world around us. One show that many used to watch is Glee. Glee is about a about a group of outcasts that try and make the glee club popular again. This takes place in a high school where the main focus is put upon the cheerleading and football teams. At the time nobody cares about nor wants to be associated with the glee club because they know that they would be judged and bullied. This thought process begins to change when Will Schuester, former glee club member, takes over the glee club and tries to bring it back to life again. He holds auditions but does not have much luck. The glee club then has the amount of members needed in order to compete and the show then follows the members through their social struggles, competing struggles, and life struggles. This show is one example of a show that one can see the social norms, values, and socialization process in our culture. In the show Glee there are many examples of social norms that are being broken and being followed. One example of a social norm being broken takes place in season one. Quinn Fabray‒glee club member and cheerleader captain‒gets pregnant with Puck‒glee club member and football player‒while she is dating Finn Hudson‒glee club member and football player‒and is still in high school. Quinn is also the president of the celibacy club at the time. She finds out that she is pregnant and lets people think that it is really Finn’s because she does not think that Puck is good enough to handle the responsibilities. When Quinn’s parents find out that she is pregnant they kick her out and she goes to live with Finn. After that the truth about the father comes out and Finn and Quinn breakup. This is an example of breaking social norms because Quinn gets pregnant at a young age and cheats in order for it to happen. In …show more content…

One example occurs through a situation in which a character's trust was violated. This is seen when Quinn cheats on Finn with Puck. There is a trust that exists between people in any type of relationship and Quinn violates that by going behind Finn’s back to be with someone else. Trust is something that is extremely valued in our society and when that is severed it is hard to gain one’s trust back. This example also shows commitment and honesty being gone against. Quinn made a commitment to be with Finn and she broke that by cheating. Then she is not being honest when she tells Finn that the baby is his when it is actually Puck’s. Another example of a value being seen in the show is family and friends. Throughout the entire show everyone somehow shows how they care about each other even if they do not exactly get along. On specific example is when the guys who are on the football team and in the glee club are forced to choose one by their coach. The guys who choose glee club over football came back because of the friendship they made with each other. Another example is when Kurt’s father has a heart attack everyone was there for him and his father trying to help in the ways they thought best would help. This shows that they all care for each other and value their friendship and will always be there for each other when they are in need.
