The Importance Of Glaucoma Awareness Month It is estimated that there are 60 million people worldwide living with glaucoma. Three million of those people live in the United States. January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. The purpose of Glaucoma Awareness Month is to raise awareness about this condition and to encourage people to get screened. What Happens If Glaucoma Is Not Treated? If glaucoma is not treated, then vision loss will occur. During the first stage of vision loss, people will start to see blind spots in their peripheral vision. This can make activities like driving very dangerous. During the second stage of vision loss, people will begin to experience tunnel vision. This is known as the total loss of peripheral vision.
