Introduction
As an Analyst at the City of X, the researcher has witnessed several instances where women in leadership roles were belittled, subjected to bullying and disrespected without regard to their titles or roles within the organization. What causes this to occur mostly by men and does the glass ceiling hinder women from gaining the respect as a leader they rightfully deserve? Per the Pew Research Center, although more women hold graduate degrees than men, there are fewer women than men in leadership roles (2015a). Only 10.6% of women serve as CEO’s in Fortune 500 and 1000 companies, and even fewer women hold leadership roles in the private and public sectors. Discrimination, gender and disrespecting their autonomy in the workplace is an issue that women who wish to become leaders encounter excessively.
The glass ceiling, which depicts a figurative barrier, has prevented women from excelling in their careers for many years. Along with work/life balance, opportunities to gain training and development skills and little to no mentoring for women who wish to climb the career ladder, women are unable to grow into leadership positions, garner respect and maintain successful in their roles.
