8 am to 4p.m shift is the largest, I often completed tasks that would have otherwise been completed by permanent staff, thus overcrowding would have equated to lack of productivity among some of the staff members.
While the department was equipped with fairly standardized equipment: cameras, video cameras, microphones, laptops, desktop computers etc. there are some equipment that do not work, especially computers. As an intern I was always eager to do work but there was a setback, the office had only 2 active/working desktop computers, hence we had to alternate times between tasks. It had one main working telephone line as well and alternation had to take place between calls, hence slowing up the pace by which work would eventually get done.
I have placed a high value, standard and worth on every work experience that I’ve attained over the years, they have all contributed to my overall development and professionalism. Despite spending little over a month at CCN, my time there was invaluable and critical in shaping my perspective as an investigative journalist. It helped me to think critically as to how to approach sources and contributed to my oral, written and communication skills.
My pursuits in the field of communication actually began at Carimac, Uwi Mona, and as such I learned the fundamentals of writing for print, television and radio. While all three aspects of journalism are critical, they employ different writing styles and diverse approaches. At CCN, I got exposed to some extent of corporate communications writing style, which also incorporated Public Relations to a lesser extent.

The standard procedure of a member of staff within CCN’s department acts as Police/Journalists. Even though they have been trained to communicate using the department’s template and communication style, they perform dual roles quite effectively. The CCN has taught me on the ground best practices of how to hold the camera, how to aim it, how to size up the different shots and how to become a courier of the story without getting into it.
More so it demanded that every member of staff and intern does each task properly, firstly by writing only factual details. Secondly, we had to verify all accounts of incidents reported, by confirming that report with Officers on the ground that were qualified to speak about it.
