I. Introduction/Problem Statement
I want to determine what gender messages are portrayed in Girl Scouts vs. Boy Scouts. With both groups researchers have studied, the gender messaging that is portrayed in the scouting handbooks but they have not looked at what is actually being passed on to the girls and boys. I will take the proposed gender messages that have been defined in text analysis research and determine if those are the message being passed on to the scouts. These messages are that Girl Scouts are taught femininity, how to be homemakers and child caregivers but they should also be able to fend so to speak for themselves, at least a little bit and Boy Scouts are taught masculinity, responsibility and obedience. To do this I will test them in an observational setting and, to add to this I will compile a survey for the boys, their parents and for the girls and their parents/leaders to determine what they believe these organizations are teaching their children. In the research I found no one has gone and observed specifically Girls and Boys involved with scouting or their parents to research gender messaging, they have only analysis the handbooks I would like to find out if what’s portrayed in the handbooks is actually, what is being taught to the children. With this research, it can be determined why Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have success with empowering children and getting them ready for later in life. It may also help expand the views of scouting so that they can stop stereotypical gender messaging that are presented to the youth so that they can lead even more fulfilling lives in adulthood.
II. Literature Reviews
In my search for studies that focus on gender messaging in scouting I found many articles that looked at...

Both, vision and mission statements provide purpose to organizations. Therefore, they should set the foundation for the strategic planning process. However, if and organizations strategic direction evolves, leaders should consider revising the organization’s mission and vision

Additionally, it’s important to keep personnel in mind when drafting a department’s mission statement, for all too often, leadership in fire departments create mission statements that sound great to those outside of the fire department, but it is either confusing to personnel or just plain out impractical (Brennan, 2010).
My chosen scene is from a popular T.V. show called How I Met Your Mother. This show goes with gender stereotypes and goes against gender stereotypes. The show is about a group of friends, Lily and Marshall being an engaged/married couple, Barney the single “player”, Robin a Canadian tomboy, and Ted the main character, who is a hopeless romantic trying to find true love in New York City. Ted, over the past couple episodes meets a girl and she becomes his girlfriend. In the meantime, he’s spending all of his time with her, Lily and Marshall have a romantic weekend planned leaving Barney and Robin to hang out together, they decide to have a “Bro” date. Robin and Barney do typical guy things, such as; smoking cigars, playing laser tag, and making fun of their other friends for being in relationships, particularly Ted. They make jokes like, “Ted’s to busy being in a lesbian relationship”, and “Ted can’t drink because he’s pregnant, because he’s a girl.” However, Barney praises Robin for being an awesome bro. Robin is a gun enthusiast, hockey loving Canadian, and an expert on cigars. Throughout the series, Ted looks for love as his friends make fun of him, and Robin continuously gets praise for her tomboyish ways. The show uses gender stereotypes for comedy, showing that it’s more socially acceptable for a woman to have more masculine hobbies but a man can’t have “feminine” qualities without being rebuked by his friends. My goal is to look at these studies to determine whether males and females are socially rebuked for being “sissies” and “tomboys” on equal levels, or if their gender makes a difference in how severe the consequences are for not being in the norm.
It is commonly argued that female and males are very different with respect to their personal characteristics, such as motivational issues and experience. (Liebermale, 2002) Even when female and males have the same characteristics, there is still some difference with respect to their behaviour and the outcome of their activities.
It is the reason why the organization exists. It is the duty of the board to ensure that the organization has a modern statement of what it is, represents, and does. The board also should periodically review the statement’s adequacy, accuracy, and viability. A mission focuses the organization and gives individuals the cause they are seeking.
Mission statements are meant to inspire and convey direction that the organization intends to stay on.”Through a mission statement, policies and procedures, a proper management style, and direction, criminal justice administrators attempt to ensure that the organization maintains its overall goals of crime treatment and suppression, and that it works amicably with other organizations and people” (Peak, p. 25). Mission statements are a written declaration that reflects the core purpose behind who the organization is and what they stand for. It encompasses the important elements and keeps people within the organization on the same page, defining what is important, the goals, and excludes the unimportant.
“Let the boys be boys.” You’ve heard this phrase before. Often repeated by parents regarding their little boys. So what makes a boy, a boy? Rambo like characteristics? Muscles? Short hair? Wearing blue? Wearing T-shirts and jeans or playing with sporting equipment? Well last I remember, the main characteristics boys shared were penises. The role gender association play in the lives of our children can sometimes affect them negatively. The messages that gender roles send, is that in order to be part of society, you must fit into the norm or the status quo or most importantly what society
It shouldn’t be something really long because those reading it will lose interest fast, but it should be long enough to answer those four questions. Lafayette IN: Within the Lafayette department, their mission statement was clear and concise. I really liked before their mission statement they stated “As leaders of the community we will perform our duties with the utmost fairness and respect for all citizens. We will be loyal to our mission and to the community we serve. We will protect and defend the rights of all citizens with dignity, honor, and compassion. We will have the courage to do what is right and to stand against what is wrong, while always applying common sense to the difficult decisions we must make” (IN Mission Statement). It gives an excellent summarization of everything a mission statement should really have. What I would change to make it a little better would be to expand more on how they would make the environment a safer place, like what actions they would take in order for it to
The process of teaching gender roles begins almost instantly after birth. For instance, female infants are generally held more gently and treated with more care than male infants. This treatment continues as the child grows, with both parents typically playing more roughly with their male children than with their female children. Not only that, but boys grow up being told that “boys should not cry” and are encouraged to control certain emotions that society believes to not be masculine, while girls are taught not to fight and not to show anger or aggression. The teaching of gender roles does not only come through obvious verbal teachings from parents and others in society, it also occurs in other social forces, such as literature (“Gender and
