A third species of gibbon was discovered in China, and to celebrate their love of all things Star Wars related, the scientists who made the discovery decided to name the gibbon after the Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker. That would be interesting if that was all there was to the explanation about the gibbon's name, but it is not exactly the whole truth about the endangered species, or about why fans of Star Wars have become enamored of photos of the skywalker hoolock gibbon. NPR reported that the Chinese team of scientists, led by Professor Fan Pengfei from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and including experts from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), who named the gibbon species the skywalker hoolock gibbon have an alternative name for …show more content…
Since there are no Chinese characters that translate to mean Luke Skywalker, hoolock tianxing is the Chinese name for the newly-discovered gibon species. The Chinese scientists who named the new gibbon species used characters that, instead, mean "Heaven's movement." CNET reported that "heaven's movement," refers to how the rare gibbon species moves, to the gibbons unique locomotory mode. The Luke Skywalker gibbons swings and leaps through trees and finds itself among some of the fastest moving tree-dwelling mammals. According to CNN, Samuel Turvey of ZSL, a member of the research team, further explained the name given to the gibbon species. Turvey said, the Star Wars-inspired name for the gibbon species points to their behavior of moving rapidly through the canopy of the forest. It also points to an ancient Chinese belief that the primates were highly venerated, almost mystical creatures that were above regular animals. Turvey called an increased awareness of the remarkable Gaoligong mountains ecosystem and for improved conservation is a necessity. He added that more research involving the skywalker hoolock gibbons should be undertaken soon, in order to learn more about this new species before it disappears for
On his 17th birthday, Cameron Griggs and his parents, drove to the office to pick up the papers that would change his life. Three months later he kissed his mum goodbye as mixed emotions of fear and excitement flooded his body.
In the rough and tropical island of Papua New Guinea, lived an exceptional aggregation of individuals called, The Gebusi. In the 1980's, The Gebusi tribe was anything besides up to date and acculturated. The Gebusi had their own particular singular and special customs and conventions that they rehearsed and accompanied. The Gebusi tribe took part in custom homosexuality, divination or witchcraft was exceedingly respected and polished, and they partook in particular sister-trade relational unions. By 1998-99, The Gebusi tribe had made another lifestyle. The Gebusi had gotten accustomed with new social convictions, modernization due to “western ways” that had changed their lives until the end of time especially changing their ways and view on gender roles and sexuality.
: The Plesiadapiforms are tiny mouse like creatures that lived during the 10 million period between the extinction of dinosaurs and appearance of humans. This could be our primate ancient ancestor. This primate has around more than 120 different species of its kind.
...however, with further research, it came to light that this was not just a “unique species” but an entire phyla that was new to science (Adler 2013). Why a new phyla? “What made the creatures seem new is they have no living descendants. They represent entire lineages, major branches on the tree of life, left behind by evolution…” (Adler 2013). While other lineages did survive-actually a collateral predecessor of the vertebrates, and that means us! (Adler 2013).

The GBR, “listed as a World Heritage Area,” resides in protection by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Wachenfeld 8). Working for this organization, employees have the ability to enforce laws to preserve the Reef as best they can. Another way the GBR gets the attention it needs is through publicity. Many people do not know that the GBR needs help and the word needs to be spread to save the Reef. The documentary, Chasing Coral, by Jeff Orlowski explains that “[w]hen you look at our planet, its unique in the known universe because we’ve got an ocean that is the source of life. It controls everything” (“Chasing Coral”). The film, focusing on coral bleaching, encompasses the widespread impacts on the GBR. It won many major film festivals around the world, showing how important reefs are, and by doing this, people are more aware what is happening and are more likely to help. Although there are efforts to aid the GBR, more needs to be done to truly save it from
“For by now, he’s come to hate questions pertaining to his name, hates having constantly to explain. He hates having to tell people that it doesn’t mean anything “in Indian” (Lahiri 76). From this quote from the book Gogol is tired of his name and tired of people thinking it has something to do with being Indian, when they don’t know the real meaning of his
First, each nationality determines the name of their child in a different way. This first passage shows opens up light on this topic. It states, “The sign of respect in America and Europe, this symbol of heritage and lineage, would be ridiculed in India. Within Bengali Families, individual names are sacred, inviolable. They are not meant to be inherited or shared” (Lahiri, 28). The cultural conflict in this passage is due to the name’s significance. The American culture does not use names so often as a way to standout and be its own. You see names, which Americans possess that are the same. James, John, and Robert are all commonly used American names. You do not see the name Gogol used too often. This quote shows how Gogol’s name is meant to standout and be different. Its it not supposed to be common or sound nice like American names, but standout and be sacred to the person and their family. It is not supposed to be looked at like anyone else’s name. The name is of greater meanin...
People who give their lives to the community, often live longer and healthier lives. The Giraffe Award is an award given to individuals who stick their necks out for the common good. To receive this award, one must take on significant personal risks, act out of caring for others, and act above and beyond the call of duty. Betty Washington earns this year’s Giraffe Award because she took significant personal risks, acted out of caring for others, and performed above and beyond the call of duty.
First of all, in The Giraffe, people want to harm the tall animal because it creates an uncomfortable atmosphere, which can be seen through the reactions of many characters. As a result, everyone, except the boys, misunderstands the habits of the giraffe, and wants to kill it at the end. One clear example of a negative reaction to the presence of the giraffe can be shown through the police officer’s reaction to the presence of the giraffe: “[…] the policeman who came and said, ‘if you don’t take it away, I’ll kill it with my revolver’ (Senesi 3).” The officer of the law looks upon the giraffe from Africa as if it is a criminal. Since the ...
Ashoke Ganguli gives the name Gogol after the Russian writer whose book or a page once had been filled in as a rescuer of his life. He named his child Gogol for
The Giraffe award was started in 1984 by a woman named Ann Medlock. The award isn't just any given award either. The Giraffe Award is an award given to one person who “sticks their neck out for the common good” and do good deeds for their community and other people. There is five main criteria that it takes to be a Giraffe. First, a Giraffe is someone who acts out in caring. Next, they must go above and beyond their duties and job description. Equally important, their doings must be ultimately healing, and not decisive. After that, they might as well rock the boat, or in others words cause problems for themselves just to make good for others. Most important of all, Giraffes must take risks whether it is a social, financial, or physical risk.
Unfortunately, besides the animal being such a stately and scientifically contributing creature, it has been endangered by various factors.
Great Apes are at the brink of extinction due to deforestation, hunting, and bushmeat trade. Our closest cousins are now viewed as economic commodities rather than valuable agents to the environment and humanity. In order to explore this issue, there must be an examinitation of why primate populations are dwindling, if these populations can replenish themselves, and what measures the international community is taking to alleviate the problem.
One important and what I feel is the greatest animal studied in zoology is the giraffe also known as Giraffa camelopardalis. The giraffe is the tallest animal averaging seventeen feet. Giraffes usually weigh about 2,500 lbs. Giraffes along with their extremely tall bodies have tongues usually fifteen inches long.
