George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Very little is known about Washington’s childhood because it is mostly fables that people made up to fill in the gaps. We do know that Washington threw a silver dollar coin across the Potomac and after he chopped down his father’s cherry tree, he confessed to the crime. It is also known that he was homeschooled and later on studied with the local church sexton and eventually a schoolmaster in math, geography, Latin and English. His dad died when he was eleven and when he was sixteen he traveled to Virginia’s western territory with a surveying party to plot land. In the early 1750s, France and Britain were at peace, but it all changed when France started moving into Britain’s territory. In 1753, Washington joined the militia. On October 31, he was sent to Fort LeBoeuf to warn the French to remove themselves from the land claimed by Britain. When the French declined, Washington rode back to Virginia and the force he was with attacked the French. Washington was later appointed as a colonel and later on a general. Along with James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, he decided that it wasn’t amendments that the new country needed, but a constitution to give and keep authority to the national government. As the very first president of the United States, Washington was wise about his presidency, aware that it is to lead the way for all that were to follow. Washington was given many names, but he one he liked the best was “Mr. President,” and that name has stuck around for years. He proved to be a capable leader, surrounding himself with the most successful people in the country and gave authority
