We all like to enjoy a nice cold glass of milk with some chocolate chip cookies or juicy corn on the cob at a family barbeque. However, many of us do not know what we are truly consuming. This is due to the fact that genetically modified foods are not required to be labeled on the everyday foods that we consume. Now this leaves to question, “Who cares if food is genetically modified, it does not affect me.” Well if we take a deeper look into what genetically modified foods are and how they are affecting our society, we realize that we are in big trouble. If our society does not bring more attention to genetically modified foods, they will have an immeasurable negative affect on human health, the American economy, and our environment. So what are genetically modified foods (GMO’s)? Genetically modified foods are the practice of changing and altering the genetic make-up of living organisms and microorganisms. Scientist have started “randomly inserting together the genes of non-related species- utilizing viruses, antibiotic-resistant genes, and bacteria as vectors, markers, and promoters-permanently alter(ing) their genetic codes” (Cummins). It is claimed that this biotechnology is necessary to feed the world and keep the farming industry and community sustainable. However, what does not come to light is how these foods have the potential to affect our health without us even knowing about it. Currently, there are more than 48 genetically modified foods that are being produced and put on the shelves of American grocery stores. This includes soybeans, corn, potatoes, squash, canola oil, papaya, tomatoes, and dairy products to name a few. The problem is that these products are unpredictable and extremely dangerous. As heated debates continue about the labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms, little does the general US population know that they eat GMOs every day. Over thirty thousand different products on grocery store shelves are GMOs, including daily products such as milk, corn, and soy (Chien). While the illustration of a butterfly sitting on a blade of grass shaped like a check mark could subconsciously reassure people that a genetically modified food product is "safe," such labeling is not needed as
The growing controversy over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have left many Americans and people all around the world with various questions and concerns as to what they are really putting into their bodies. The issue at hand is one that, although is very dominant in the world today, many are still uneducated on the problem and have not been informed with the facts. GMOs have been placed in the world without much question or second thought and it is time that America hear what should have been
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a highly debated topic all around the world. Someone from each side of the debate has an argument as to why GMOs should or should not be produced. Unfortunately, many others who are consuming these genetically modified products do not know that they are eating them and they do not know what they are. According to The American Heritage Dictionary online edition, a GMO is “an organism whose genetic characteristics have been altered by the insertion of a modified
at the same time benefit the producers. “The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimate that farmers will have to produce 70% more food by 2050 to meet the needs of the world's expected 9-billion-strong population. That amounts to one billion tons more wheat, rice and other cereals.” Less than one per cent of the American population is responsible for growing and harvesting all of the food for this country alone. The demand overseas for American produce varies depending upon the product, but
animals and crops are being genetically modified to grow faster, larger, tastier, and stay fresh longer. A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes than normal (Dictionary.com). What do these changes to the DNA of crops mean for the safety of the consumer? Any crop that is modified on the genetic level in such a way that
have easy access to unhealthy foods especially with many fast food places. Citizens of America are unaware of the health risks when the consume the unhealthy. One of the health risks is bacteria found in the processed meat that people have died from. The reason for the for the health risks is due to companies taking shortcuts in their raising of livestock and production lines. Companies have made millions from the sales with their products on shelves of many grocery stores. Since companies have the
chance! Genetically modified peas, that is. Genetically modified food (or GM for short) - it almost sounds otherworldly in a sense, but this is undoubtedly where the world is headed, especially with the world population rising faster than ever. Typically, genomes are spliced and DNA are ever so slightly modified by the intrusion of humans for the sake of a beefier tomato. In a sense, this is the layman term anyone can understand, more or less. The general population seems to agree that genetically modified
isn't Kraft MacNCheese allowed to be sold on the shelves of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, but it's sold here in the USA? The U.S. Government states that genetically modified foods and organisms don’t pose any health risks to the public, but several scientific studies indicate otherwise. While other countries require that GM foods and goods are to be labeled, the United States does not. Most people aren’t as informed about genetically modified organisms as they should be, making this a deadly
Cheney and Curt Ellis a yearlong to understand where their food comes from by growing it. While filming the documentary Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis tried to go corn free for a month they discovered that it was not feasible to do. They released the documentary for us to see what happens to the food that we eat and the process it goes though before we buy it at the supermarket. By doing the research to write this paper it made me realize that the food industry and the government are not protecting humans
When you go to the grocery store, what types of produce, otherwise known as fruits and vegetables, do you buy? Do you look for the “organic” labels, or stick with the conventional options? You may question the difference between the two. After all, an organically grown apple often looks and tastes the same as its conventionally grown, genetically modified counterpart. The price of the organic apple, however, will more than likely be significantly higher than that of the conventional apple. Sometimes
Whole Food V. Processed Foods Is it really possible to be well-fed and starving at the same time? Astoundingly, the answer is YES. In fact, today millions of Americans are doing it. They are consuming abundant food, but keeping the cells deprived of food (nutrition). Because, what they are having are nothing but chemically “Processed Foods”. It is the reason not only Americans, but people all around the world get fat and fall sick. Let us discover together, what processed foods are and why
group worldwide in terms of revenue after Wal-Mart. Carrefour has 12 547 stores, 456 295 employees in 29 countries worldwide. Carrefour’s first store was opened in 1960, in Annecy, France and today the original store is still operating and is the smallest Carrefour location in the world. The Carrefour group pioneered the idea of a ‘hypermarket,’ which is a large outlet consisting of both a grocery store and department store under one roof. Carrefour’s fist ‘hypermarket’ opened in 1963, in Saint-Genevieve-des-Bois
In the book Fast Food Nation: The Darks Side of the All-American Meal, Eric Schlosser claims that fast food impacts more than our eating habits, it impacts “…our economy, our culture, and our values”(3) . At the heart of Schlosser’s argument is that the entrepreneurial spirit —defined by hard work, innovation, and taking extraordinary risks— has nothing to do with the rise of the fast food empire and all its subsidiaries. In reality, the success of a fast food restaurant is contingent upon obtaining
If our food choices were driven solely on the factors of hunger, and the desire for nutrient, and energy efficient fuel for the body, we as Americans would be a healthier bunch, eating the same foods our great grandmothers could recognize. However this is not the case. So, what are the determining factors shaping what foods we eat? With time, food and technology have progressed, as the food industry has changed the food game completely by having influence on consumer. According to International Food
lives. People of the United States have been spoiled, they’ve never had to worry about the grocery stores running empty because, even to this day, there hasn’t been a problem growing enough to feed, not only the U.S. but a good part of the world too. The day though is fast approaching that we won’t be able to keep those grocery stores stocked. Due to the depletion of the vital resources, needed to produce our food, it is becoming increasingly challenging for today’s agriculturalists to feed the world
