What we eat today seems like what our ancestors ate. At least that is what we believe. However, something profoundly different has happened without our knowledge or consent. Based on what renowned doctors have said, what we did not notice before can be already hurting the humanity tremendously. Genetically modified foods are those plants or animals that have been modified from an organism by genetic engineering to produce the desired characteristics. Today, there is still no concise answer to this catastrophic issue of genetically modified foods. No, genetically modified foods are created to have a longer shelf life, withstand harsh environmental conditions, resist herbicides, resist insect pests, resist diseases and to be more nutritious. Nowadays, eight GMO crops have been approved for commercial productions and we see them at every supermarket we go to; soy, cotton, corn, canola, sugar beet, papaya, squash, and alfalfa. Also, processed soy and corn ingredients are incorporated in about 60% of industrially processed foods. Such as baked goods, chocolates, frozen foods, ice cream, snacks, jams, margarine, vegetable oil, among others. Many of the animal proteins we eat such as beef, chicken, pork, turkey and egg may have been corn-fed. It is critical to read the labels of the foods we buy at grocery stores to see if they are GMO-free. If a product has the USDA Organic label on it, it was not produced with GMOs. Also, it could say grass-fed. Even newborns may be ingesting these genetically modified foods without parents noticing. Many babies are fed soy infant formula. These babies may have problems developing their sexual organs, especially if they are boys. They could develop gynecomastia during puberty and poor development of the testicles.
