Can you imagine a place so grotesque, where most of their essential nutrients are not harvested from the land, but in a laboratory? Where scientists purposely obscure their research of negative effects in order to maximize profits? Who would allow humankind to fall under monopolies and potentially fatal outcomes, all in the name of monetary value? This is the United States. “(GMOs) can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally” (“Diarrhea, Skin Rashes”). Genetically Modified Organisms induce harmful effects to the human body and threaten the earth’s ecosystem; however, an alternative solution to this problem is to invest in more organic farms, as well as providing citizens with a “duty summons” to aid in flourishing society’s harvest. Health concerns are a declining priority, while an increasing amount of civilian population has become affected since the introduction of genetically modified organisms. Food has become a business to produce unnatural DNA with high concentrations of herbicide glyphosate. This is a problem because studies have linked genetically modified foods and their high levels of toxic glyphosate as the major contributing factor in allergies, weight gain, liver problems and celiac disease, as well as many other potentially fatal health problems. Celiac disease is a high concern because it is a condition known to present a reaction towards gluten and can eventually disrupt the absorption of principal food nutrients (“Diarrhea, Skin Rashes”). Doctors have also been baffled by these cases and recommend that one lowers their intake of genetically modified foods (Enghdahl). Food is an essential part of everyday life without it one could not survive. Every day we make choices on what we put in to our bodies. There are countless varieties of food to choose from to meet the diverse tastes of the increasing population. Almost all food requires a label explaining the ingredients and the nutritional value allowing consumers to make informed decisions on what they are consuming. However, many may not be considering where that food is coming from or how it has been produced. Unfortunately, there is more to food than meets the eye. Since 1992, “ the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled, based on woefully limited data, that genetically modified foods were ‘substantially equivalent’ to their non-GM counterparts” (Why to Support Labeling). GM food advocates have promised to create more nutritious food that will be able to grow in harsh climate conditions and eventually put an end to world hunger in anticipation of the growing population. There is very little evidence to support these claims and study after study has proven just the opposite. GM crops are not only unsafe to consume, but their growing practices are harmful to the environment, and multinational corporations are putting farmers out of business.
When people hear the two words “Organic Foods”, many questions come to mind. Such questions include “what is organic food”, “what does the term organic mean”, and “why should I spend more money on organic food”? Organic food began many years ago before new discoveries and technology ever existed. Throughout the decades, organic food has evolved and caught more attention from buyers and producers than ever before. There are many standards in place to authorize the use of the label “Organic” and also to ensure quality. Regulations and enforcement is placed highly. Understanding the many different labels can be confusing due to the variety of the many different labels. Knowing what to look for and buy is the key to buying truly organic food therefore reaping all the many benefits. Tips will be discussed for those who do not have a full understanding of purchasing organic foods. Many benefits will be derived from going the extra mile to buy and eat organic food. Many researches have been done in supporting the benefits of organic foods. Organic food is a holistic approach acting as a preventive measure and also as a treatment of one’s disease based on individual daily diet.
The past twenty years have seen rise to a new burgeoning scientific field: genetically modified foods. During the plant breeding process, geneticists interfere with the reproduction and modify the genes of the new seedling by introducing a fragment of DNA from another organism that possesses the desired trait. With genetic modification, scientists can increase the pest, herbicide, cold, and drought tolerance so that the crop can survive in harsher climates. In some cases, the nutritional value can even be increased (Ulrich 9). Despite the obvious benefits of more nutritious foods and crops that are hardier and more resistant to harsher climates, there are some concerns surrounding GM foods. Each new alteration can cause an unforeseen allergic reaction, negate the effects of antibiotics, or potentially cause some adverse effects to the environment (Falkner 101). Every newly developed GM food must be tested on a case by case basis as there is no universal method that determines the safety of all modified components. As a result, long term effects of ingesting food with altered material are unknown.

This has created a large amount of debate on local, national, and international levels about the safety of genetically modified foods to human health. There are many angles that have been taken from different groups on this issue. Some believe it is harmful to our health, with one source stating that, “mice eating GMO corn had fewer and smaller babies (Jagelio 2013).” Without testing on humans how are we to know these harmful effects aren’t impacting our health and reproduction. Other groups see GMOs as being both beneficial and having no impact on human health.
Consuming foods that have been genetically altered have serious health risks based on research done on rats by The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), an international organization of physicians. Risks include infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems and organ damage. How many of you hear the words “genetically modified food” and immediately think “BAD”? How many of you scorn the idea that genetically modified foods are useful? How many of you have been manipulated by the media to think that all biotechnology is evil? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been genetically spliced to achieve a certain trait. As the demand for a larger food supply is increasing due to population growth, the benefits that GMO foods provide are being hailed as the only solution to the food crisis. However, many people are making inadequately informed decisions, and are pushing them to the back shelf. I will inform you on why genetically modified organisms may be the only way to a stable, safe future for the less fortunate.

Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
Genetically modified food’s, or GMOs, goal is to feed the world's malnourished and undernourished population. Exploring the positive side to GMOs paints a wondrous picture for our planet’s future, although careful steps must be taken to ensure that destruction of our ecosystems do not occur. When GMOs were first introduced into the consumer market they claimed that they would help eliminate the world’s food crisis by providing plants that produced more and were resistant to elemental impacts like droughts and bacterial contaminants, however, production isn’t the only cause for the world’s food crisis. Which is a cause for concern because the population on the earth is growing and our land and ways of agriculture will not be enough to feed everyone sufficiently. No simple solutions can be found or applied when there are so many lives involved. Those who are hungry and those who are over fed, alike, have to consider the consequences of Genetically Modified Organisms. Food should not be treated like a commodity it is a human necessity on the most basic of levels. When egos, hidden agendas, and personal gains are folded into people's food sources no one wins. As in many things of life, there is no true right way or wrong way to handle either of the arguments and so many factors are involved that a ‘simple’ solution is simply not an option.
As human technological innovation proceeds into the twenty-first century, society is faced with many complex issues. Genetic engineering and cloning, encryption and information security, and advanced weapons technologies are all prominent examples of technological issues that have substantial moral and ethical implications. Genetic engineering in particular is currently a very volatile subject. One important aspect of this field is GMO or Genetically Modified Organisms, which has far-reaching potential to revolutionize modern agriculture. GMO crops are already being developed by many leading biotech companies, and have come under intense scrutiny by society. This is easily understood, however, because there is not much that is more important than how people get fed. Specifically, where their food comes from, and how it is produced. Thus, it is essential that we examine the ethical dilemmas as well as the practical benefits posed by such a powerful technology.
