Genetic Engineering: The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering, also known as genetic modification is the deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by changing the genetic makeup of cells using biotechnologies. It is a set of set of technologies used to alter the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes within and across species to produce and improve organisms. Genetic engineering should be continued along with the unknown consequences. There aren’t any clues as to where the functional genes are being placed. These genes may replace the important genes, instead of mutated genes. Genetic engineering has a likely hood of leading to another health or serious disease for humans. A big disadvantages of genetic engineering is that it could create unknown …show more content…

With the advances in genetic modification, we could be living longer. The diseases and illnesses that show up later in life could end up killing you earlier than planned. But with genetic engineering we could reverse some of the reasons for the body’s natural aging on a cellular level, which could improve our life span and the quality of life. Although this would improve on already existing life, but if we wipe out every disease, the world would become too overpopulated, more than it already is. Even though we should get rid of diseases we should keep some because of the reason stated above. One of the main problems with genetic engineering is the question about the safety of making changes at the cellular level. Scientists have a very good idea on how the body works, they don’t understand the consequences of the slightest changes yet. If they wipe out one disease it has a chance of introducing another disease which could be even more dangerous. (future, …show more content…

Many genetic scientists want to bring an end to current diseases and illnesses. However is some people taking it too far? What if we start to create ‘designer babies’, choosing what hair colour, eye colour, height and intelligence or even start to choose the sex of the baby? Is it right? The problems with genetic engineering are going too far and causing an ever present worry in a world where genetic engineering is still progressing. Altering the genes of organisms has raised a few eyebrows, it may work wonder but is playing with nature “really safe”? There are lots of reasons why we should be using genetic engineering but is it become over used? Make yourself aware of the aspects of genetic engineering can help you understand and form your own opinion. What’s your opinion? Conclusion: Genetic engineering can benefit us in many ways, but we need to take in consideration that there are unknown consequences and outcomes that come along with it and many issues as well. We should continue genetic engineering but take precaution with the process of
