For decades, genetic engineering has been a plot device for the science fiction genre. From Huxley’s Brave New World to the 1997 sci-fi film Gattaca, embryo design has always been seen as the technology of a weird and alternate universe. In today’s society, this technology is both real and available. People are able to use embryo design and select specific traits before giving birth to their children. While this science is exciting and possibly groundbreaking, it is not without its questions and concerns. The moral and ethical debate that surrounds embryo design is vast and nuanced. This advanced technology is a science that the world hasn’t quite made up their mind about yet.
Embryo design is a process used to genetically engineer babies outside of a living organism for specific traits, which run the gamut. Embryo design advancing could lead to new discoveries in other areas of genetics. This science also poses important moral and ethical questions to geneticists and the rest of the world. A part of technological advancement is the need to make decisions about which path the developments will take. After the discovery of genetically altering an embryo before implantation, “designer babies” was coined to describe a child genetically altered “to ensure specific intellectual and cosmetic characteristics.” (“Designer Babies” n.p.). This procedure combines genetic engineering and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to make sure certain characteristics are absent or present in an embryo (Thadani n.p.). The procedure also includes taking an embryo to be pre-implementation genetically diagnosed (PGD), another procedure that doctors use to screen the embryos (Stock n.p.). An embryo’s DNA goes through multiple tests to obtain an analysis of the embryo, which will list all the components of the embryo including genetic disorders and physical traits such as Down syndrome, blue eyes, and brown hair, for instance (Smith 7). The ethics behind genetic engineering have been discussed and argued for years now. Some arguing points often include competitive advantages, playing God, and the polarization of society, but Sandel takes a different approach in explaining society’s “unease” with the morality of genetic engineering. Broadcasted through several examples throughout the book, Sandel explains that genetic engineering is immoral because it takes away what makes us human and makes us something else. He states that by taking control of our genetic makeup, or the makeup of our progeny, we lose our human dignity and humility. Our hunger for control will lead to the loss of appreciation for natural gifts, whether they are certain talents, inherited from the genetic lottery, or the gift of life itself.

This issue arose over the possibility of having a human embryo with three genetic parents which is now possible due to genetic engineering. Biology is the science of life. Technology uses science to solve problems. Our society has progressed in its understanding of life to the point that we are able to manipulate it on a fundamental level through technology. This has led to profound ethical dilemmas. The movie Gattaca explores some important bioethical issues that are currently the focus of much dispute. The underlying thematic issue presented is the question of the extent to which biologically inherent human potential determines the true potential of a person. Perhaps the most controversial issue in Gattaca is the use of genetic engineering technology in humans to create a more perfect society; this is, essentially, a new method of Eugenics.
