In society there are gender roles, men and women have basic guidelines on how they should dress, behave, and work. For centuries, men and women have followed these guidelines (maybe unconsciously.) Robert Atwan, proposes the questions, “Do your beliefs ever conflict with the dominant views of gender and gender roles? Have your views changed in anyway? What caused them to change?” I personally think that gender roles are good to have. Not to the extreme but I believe that men and woman should have things each should do. Women I believe should, clean the home, cook meals, and tend to the errands. This may not work in all households depending on the couples work schedule, but in an ideal world I think that is how it should be. This may sound unsettling for some women, because they do not want to depend on a man to cut their grass. That is fine, it is up to each individual to do tasks that make them feel liberated. There are so many women who feel helpless when it comes to defending their selves against men. Emily Potter is a student at the University of California, Santa Barbra. Potter states, “[A]ccecpted that no matter how unfair, it is simply is not safe for me to walk alone in Isla Vista at night” (327), I think this is sad, but it is true. It is not safe for any woman -- in any neighborhood to walk around at night alone. Domestic violence is a constant uphill battle, which I believe is solely caused by gender roles, and that since men are viewed as superior to women that they have the control to beat their woman.
