Gender equality and gender roles go hand in hand in society. These two concepts complement each other to the extent in which one must know about both to fully understand the capacity of either. Gender roles are roles each sex is given. These are stereotypical things. Gender is how people are seen by society. This is imprinted in the brain at a young age and is formed and molded through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and late adulthood. Each stage comes with different ideas about gender and power. For example, things like women cook and men work. In today’s society men and women are not equal. Gender inequality and gender roles are one of our countries biggest issues.
It seems hard to imagine that less than a century ago women were not able to vote in the United States, but women fought and won that right. During the women’s suffrage movement, many Christian women’s groups supported women’s right to vote, but the argument against it seemed stronger, as far as religion was concerned. Men held steadfast that God was on their side, declaring that the Bible told them so: “But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:3).
Childhood is the point in life where the environment most influences the formation of gender schemas and stereotypes. Gender schemas are an important part of understanding how a person sees the opposite sex. Gender Schemas present the children children develop the differences between boys and girls. On the other hand there is stereotyping. Stereotyping is also process that begins during childhood. Young children know that male stereotypes are high in power whereas female stereotypes convey fear and helplessness. Ch...

Despite the heavy reliance, older women’s benefits are lower than men’s. The Social Security Administration says women average $274 less than men each month (Meyer and herd, p. 68). Women continue to get the short end up the stick even in their old age. Gender roles have affected women throughout history. Males and females are not equal in today’s economy, because of the ideas that have been developed about gender roles. In the workplace the opportunities for men and women are different. There is inequality in labor, science, medical, and teaching jobs. As a result net worth’s of men and women are severely different. This causes inequality in things like nursing homes and retirement funds.
