Gender Income Gap In American society today there is an imbalance in the gender income gap between men and women in the work force. Many factors such as discrimination, productivity, educational background and disproportional hours worked play a role in this ongoing challenge. In 2000, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that women averaged only 80% of what men earned (Lasowski, 2008). In past decades the gender income gap has narrowed, however to close the gap, the factors must be fully understood as well as all available solutions explored. Women who have children often find that working long hours are difficult to overcome as they tend to their children and household responsibilities. Therefore, women who have or decide to have children take lower wage positions so that they may raise their family, thus contributing to the gender income gap and productivity. In the online article “A Grand Gender Convergence: It’s Last Chapter”, Goldin points out that “gender gap in wages has been regarded as a summarizing human capital differences between men’s and women’s productivity as well as differential treatment of men and women in the labor market”(2014). Different characteristics surrounding the degree of knowledge, competencies, productivity and experience will vary between genders. Employers may employ differential treatment in the workplace by reducing or increasing an individual’s wages and hours worked to ensure profitability for the organization. However, differential treatment based on gender, competencies and skills can impact productivity as employees may feel less valuable than their co-workers, which could lead to hostility, friction and lower profitability within the
