The Role Of Males In Traditional Chinese Culture

In traditional Chinese culture, the status of males are essential than females because the role of males in a family is the leader and in charge of external matters such as working to support the family, whereas the role of females in a family is the follower and in charge of internal matters such as housework. Thus, only males have power in the family even in society which called patriarchy society. However, the belief of different gender’s standing has changed in the past few decades as females have opportunities and abilities to work in society even their working postitions are higher than males’. When I was grade one, an organziation about protecting youngsters under eighteen years old from sexual abuse came to my school to teach girls to protect ourselves. This was the first time that I noticed girls and boys have differences. The workshop made me shocked because I had never known that girls could easily be sexually abused by boys. Since then, I learned to protect myelf. For example, I started to make a safe distance when I was playing with my younger brother even though he did not know what is sexual abuse. I had never heard about intersexual, transgender and gender-non-conforming when I was an elementary school student. I had never imagined that How I feel if I have a classmate is transgender, but now I have a classmate is transgender in college. I hated dancing and girlish fashion, such as wearing dresses, and having a long hair, whereas I loved wearing pants and playing basketball when I was eleven to twelve years old. I actually had a confusing time about gender because I did not want to be a vulnerable girl, but I did not know how to be a girlish but strong and tough

In this quarter, I have a transgender classmate in my Korean class. Actually, he is an Asian boy, but he dresses up as a girl. I was curious at the first time when I saw him, but I think he is an ordinary person that he wants to become himself only. Even though I am a Christian, I think everyone has a right to be himself or herself. After I came to the United States, the social norms and cultures in the U.S. are different with my hometown’s. In my experience, I saw some gay couples held their hands in a shopping mall in the United States in this one year; however, the same situation that I only saw few times in my hometown in the past eighteen years. In my opinion, freedom is the biggest value in the United States, so people in this society without being controlled or restricted have confidence to confront their
