ABC (ABC News, 2018) have done research on retired athletes and have seen how they have coped with retirement. Gearoid Towey is a retired Olympian rower and has stated "At the moment, athletes are competing for maybe 10 years, if they're lucky — 10 years out of an 80-year life. At the moment, that 10 years for a lot of people, it's destroying the rest of their lives." Many athletes find them self in the wrong state of mind when they retire and find it very hard to get themselves back to a healthy mindset. Dan Vickerman found himself in this position and he fought depression and unfortunately it ended up taking his life.
