Gay marriage should be legal

Same sex marriage is a big issue not only in the US but in the whole world. Recently, more and more countries started legalizing same sex marriage, but it’s not even close to being legalized and accepted everywhere. People have their own reasons for not supporting it. One of the reasons is religion: “Being gay is against god and we can’t support that.” Others say it’s not natural. And some others are just ignorant and don’t know anything about it.
I am not saying everyone should support gay marriage, but I think it’s not our job to support or not support something that has absolutely nothing to do with us. Gay marriage should be legal everywhere and these are some of the most important reasons why.
First, marriage is a basic civil right. Who are we to deny someone’s right and say their love is not real just because it’s different than ours? What would you do if someone told you that you can’t get married only because some people think you shouldn’t? Every person should be able to marry who they love as long as it doesn’t affect anyone else.
Interracial marriage was illegal in the U.S. till 1967. That was over 45 years ago, but we obviously didn’t learn anything from it. In 1967 in Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court held that banning interracial marriage violated the Equal Protection Clause (the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution) because marriage is a fundamental right. So why is it different for people of the same sex?
Some people say it’s because it’s not natural and gay people can’t have kids. Well, alright then, let’s divorce all the heterosexual couples who don’t want or can’t have kids. ...e of you ends up in a hospital, the other one can’t be there. I heard stories about people being arrested for not wanting to leave their partner’s hospital room. Things like that shouldn’t happen. Gay people should be able to marry and have the same benefits like everyone else.
Other thing that gay people can’t have because of the gay marriage ban is social security benefits. For example, married couples can maximize their retirement benefits by taking advantage of the highest-earner’s benefit. When both spouses are alive, the one who has lower income have a right to collect a monthly benefit check that equals 50% of his or her spouse’s benefit. When the spouse with higher income dies, the other one is allowed to collect 100% of their benefit. Since same sex couples, even if married, are not recognized on the federal level, they can’t collect any of these benefits.
