The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Yet, same-sex marriage continues to be a highly debated issue. George Chauncey gives a road map of the history of marriage equality in his article “The Long Road to Marriage Equality,” same-sex marriage has always existed but became a hot issue in the 1970's. In the 70's the Supreme Court of the United States in the state of Minnesota upheld a lower court's decision that denying a marriage license to same-sex couple did not violate the United States Constitution. American children are educated that the United States of America is one of the best countries around that is until you look at our past to see that we enslaved races, killed because we did not like someone, and are not allowing people to marry because they are the same-sex (Chauncey). Marriage equality needs to be legal at the federal level because it creates a lack of identity, no one’s rights are infringed upon except those who are not allowed to marry, and same-sex couples need the same benefits as heterosexual couples.
Marriage is important to homosexual couples because without marriage equality they feel like their identity in not important because they are not equal. TV shows demonstrate the opposite of how many same-sex couples feel about marriage; they express same-sex couples about not worrying about marriage. American Dad is a good example of this because they have a gay couple as anchors and they never talk about marriage. They do discuss how the government only sees them as buddies because the government does not recognize their relationship. Their identity is important because it is who they are and how they let people see them. If same-sex...

Abstract On June 26, 2015 a divided Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex couples could now marry nationwide. At the time of the split ruling there were 9 supreme court justices, 5 of the justices were Republicans, and the remaining 4 were Democrats. In high profile cases it is except that the justices will vote along party lines. When the 5-4 ruling was reveled by the following statement. “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right (Corn,2015).” written by

In the late1960’s American politics were shifting at a National level with liberalism being less supported as its politics were perceived as flawed, both by people on the left who thought that liberalism was not as effective as more radical political enterprises and by conservatives who believed that liberal politics were ostensibly crippling the American economy.

Though he made a compelling argument and posed thought provoking questions that supported his argument, the flaws in his argument, after stringent analysis, contradict his main points. On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Should gay marriages be legal? Clearly we as a nation are undecided on this issue. Thirty-six states have passed legislation banning gay marriages, yet a few states have passed laws that allows homosexual couples the right to participate in civil unions. Several other states are also debating whether or not to allow these couples to marry. Unfortunately, the dispute has left the United States' homosexual community in an awkward position. There are some people who think that gay people have no rights and should never be allowed to marry, and others believe that gay people should enjoy the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals. I think that the United States should allow same-sex couples to marry just like heterosexual couples.
