Why deny them the right to express their commitment to each other through the institution of marriage? If two people are gay and they want to be together, they are going to be together whether other people approve of the relationship or not. President Bush has been trying to put into effect an amendment to ban gay marriages. If this were to happen, it would violate over 1,100 rights, protections, and benefits guaranteed to the citizens of the United States (Oppose the discriminatory “Federal Anti-Marriage Amendment). The Constitution has been amended seventeen times in the past; however, all of these cases were to PROTECT the rights and civil liberties, not to deny them (Oppose the Discriminatory “Federal Anti-Marriage Amendment”).
The act not only violated the 14th amendment but also couples marriage benefits including hospital visitation during an illness, taxation and inheritance rights, access to family health coverage, and protection in the event of divorce. Not to mention, Gay marriage would make it easier for same-sex couples to adopt, providing stable homes for children who would otherwise be left in foster care. There are several various reasons that gays and lesbians seek the right of marriage for personal reasons also and they should not be denied the same rights as anyone.
Same-sex couples also don’t have the right to protections like a heterosexual couple would if their relationship were to end. According to the article, the US 9th Circuit of Appeals received a request from two homosexual couples that would force the campaigners againt gay marriage to make their private communications during the campaign available to the public. This, an attorney for the two homosexual couples believes, would make it apparent that the campaign against same sex marriage used an unfair method of invoking fear that both traditional marriage and society as a whole would collapse if gay marriage were allowed. On the other hand, attorneys for the advocates of traditional marriage believe that being forced to give out their internal communications during the Proposition 8 campaign would be an infringement on the freedom of speech and the unwritten rules of politics.
