In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows a picture of 1920's America. In that period of time, just after world war one, the American economics was developing at a very fast speed. Prosperity changed people's spirit and values, wealthy people lived extravagant lives, and they tried to seek pleasure all day long. Millions of peoples try to get wealthy, and that was their dream. American dream as one of the most important factor in the society in the 1920s American, and it plays a primary role in the novel. The way of Fitzgerald to name this novel is different to any other book, it name “The Great Gatsby" rather than "Gatsby", but how can a man who was dead and didn't research his goal to be a great man? There are lot of people who study the Great Gatsby believe this novel is full of satire to Gatsby, and Gatsby is a looser in the society. In fact, many factor support Gatsby is a great dream chaser, even though Gatsby is dead and he didn't achieve his dream. As definition of the American dream "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth" (James Truslow Adams). In the novel, Gatsby want to renew the relationship with Daisy who is Gatsby's dream girl and marry another man who is wealthy and in the upper classes. Gatsby endeavor to get wealthy by hook or crook, he holds a big party in his house just for catching Daisy's attention, he is a typical example of the people who pursue American Dream. However, at the end of the story, Gatsby is killed, and Daisy still lives with her husband Tom. Gatsby didn't research his goal. He is dead for his dream. It is meant Gatsby is a loser and not successful man? Gatsby bor... ... middle of paper ... ...n becomes their friends. Nick never thinks Gatsby is not great or a looser. At the same time he is disdained with the wealthy people in the east side of American, and he doesn't want to live the life just like they live which is extravagant and corruption. Gatsby could become one of the greatest dream chaser in the history just like Robert Falcon Scott if he doesn't live in the east of Unite State.
