In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows a picture of 1920's America. In that period of time, just after world war one, the American economics was developing at a very fast speed. Prosperity changed people's spirit and values, wealthy people lived extravagant lives, and they tried to seek pleasure all day long. Millions of peoples try to get wealthy, and that was their dream. American dream as one of the most important factor in the society in the 1920s American, and it plays a primary role in the novel. The way of Fitzgerald to name this novel is different to any other book, it name “The Great Gatsby" rather than "Gatsby", but how can a man who was dead and didn't research his goal to be a great man? There are lot of people who study the Great Gatsby believe this novel is full of satire to Gatsby, and Gatsby is a looser in the society. In fact, many factor support Gatsby is a great dream chaser, even though Gatsby is dead and he didn't achieve his dream. As definition of the American dream "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth" (James Truslow Adams). In the novel, Gatsby want to renew the relationship with Daisy who is Gatsby's dream girl and marry another man who is wealthy and in the upper classes. Gatsby endeavor to get wealthy by hook or crook, he holds a big party in his house just for catching Daisy's attention, he is a typical example of the people who pursue American Dream. However, at the end of the story, Gatsby is killed, and Daisy still lives with her husband Tom. Gatsby didn't research his goal. He is dead for his dream. A fine and daring ideal in the 18th century, and at the heart of what America hoped that it stood for. 'The Great Gatsby' examines how this dream existed in the early 20th century and whether or not it had been accomplished. The American Dream permeated all of society, and so every one of the characters in the book is in some senses a reflection of the the world envisaged by Jefferson and Washington, and even before them by those first people fleeing to a new life in the New World.

Young James Gatz had always had dreams of being upper class, he didn't only want to have wealth, but he wanted to live the way the wealthy lived. At a young age he ran away from home; on the way he met Dan Cody, a rich sailor who taught him much of what he would later use to give the world an impression that he was wealthy. After becoming a soldier, Gatsby met an upper class girl named Daisy - the two fell in love. The realization that America had been changed and transformed into a new world arose. America has become a new world with a new set of traditional beliefs. Gatsby is not so great because he is a liar. From the very start Gatsby is said to be an alumnus from Oxford, who fought in WWI, hunted big game, and had parents from the Midwest. He even justifies himself when Nicks asks and Gatsby pulls out a picture of him at Oxford and a WWI medal that he carried around in his pocket. He even changed his name, James Gatz to Jay Gatsby, but why? “James Gatz – that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (6). Gatsby is mysterious and mystifying, known for his large parties yet no one knows why he has them. Keep in mind this is the prohibition era, but at Gatsby’s parties there is always plenty of alcohol to go around and no one knows where it comes from or how he acquires so much, one of the many mysteries. In the Great Gatsby, happiness is portrayed in unusual forms with different characters, however every single character had some form of a Dream in mind. Fitzgerald juxtaposes his influence of T.S Elliot’s use of Valley of the Ashes showing poverty, decay and lost spiritualism with the rich life style of West Egg as he shows the wealth, parties and liveliness in this Egg. Tom and Daisy have minor conflicts with time that parallel Gatsby’s principal struggle with time, yet Gatsby’s dream emerges as the distinguishing factor of his conflict. When challenging the natural course of time, a dream, created by the intricate workings of the mind, and a simple memory of the past cannot be attained with the greatness of their origin. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s destruction and the death of his undying dream are intensified through the magnification of the conflicts found in the characters of Tom and Daisy Buchanan.
