James Gatz was bound for success. From an early age, it was evident that through methods of self-improvement and discipline, James Gatz would achieve the American Dream by becoming something from nothing. But somewhere along the way, James Gatz deviated away from these ideas, and became Jay Gatsby. This new phase of his life would be filled with greed, corruption, and dishonesty. This downfall was caused from an obsession of a dream. Jay Gatsby created a man in his dreams that was full of wealth and prosperity; in other words a fantasy. Yet it was Gatsby’s inability to see through his illusions and dreams that led to his collapse.
“Jimmy was bound to get ahead.” (Fitzgerald 173) This quote was said by the father of Jay Gatsby moments before the funeral reception. In a closer examination of the early years of Gatsby, this quote is spot on. In fact, the young James Gatz can be compared to Benjamin Franklin.
