The next step within the responsible products section would be the continuation to improve the design of the final products. This initiative was implemented from the beginning for the business but not specially called out. Striving to continually improve product design, making our devices thinner, lighter, and more durable, which reduces the amount of materials without sacrificing the rich features. This initiative is also not only for the design of the product but can include the packaging that the product is shipped in. By decreasing the overall shipped air the product can take up a smaller footprint. Thus resulting in lower freights charges and less potential pollution put into the air. Similar to the sustainability initiative in order to eliminate hazardous waste the project manager for the project will be the single contact point for collecting the progress of all the different teams. In the same weekly meeting the key stakeholders will come together in order to monitor the progress of the project. This allows for changes to take affect and the teams can course correct as needed. The important factor in regards to the different Garmin initiatives is that if there is any cause of concern for the organization. They project manager will collect the information from the stakeholders that are in charge of the design. This is then put into a corporate document that is then routed to the executive engineering resources in a biweekly meeting. The first would be in the overall look of the product, does the product fulfill the needs of the market? Is it smaller, lighter, faster and more durable, these are many of the questions that are asked in determining if the design was a success? The next metric that the company will use to determine the success of the product design would be the size of the packaging. Does it show the equally quality of the product, also what the amount of shipped air is? The amount of shipped air is extremely important in not wasting resources. Over the past 2 years the team that I manage has been able to save Garmin approximately 450,000 dollars in modifying the packaging size and cost. Currently there are not any rewards or acknowledgement for individuals to successfully obtain sustainability for marketing. Looking ahead I have determined that there needs to be some type of acknowledgment for employees outside of the engineering departments that contribute to corporate sustainability. This strategy is to recognize the different departments that put in the effort to make the company as a whole sustainable. In order to do this I have drafted an outline of the process and procedure for packaging sustainability.
