Do you know the affect garbage has on the oceans? Garbage harms the animals that live in Long Island Sound and humans. This harm is primarily caused by humans. When garbage is left on the beach most people most likely don’t realize the affect that they are having on the environment. That garbage will eventually make it’s way into our oceans. The winds can carry it there or it could get washed up by the tide. Many things can happen with this garbage including the animals eat the garbage, it affects humans through the food we eat, and it harms humans by getting into the oxygen released by the ocean and how people can help to get rid of lots of this garbage. By doing something as simple as not littering these things will no longer happen. Littering is one of the many problems that harm our oceans, but is definitely the easiest to prevent and one of the bigger problems that harm the Long Island Sound. …show more content…

Scientist say that about 14 billion or more pounds of garbage are dumped into our oceans every year. A study found early this year says that plastics are being eaten by animals, like dolphins and whales, and then the plastics can not be digested by the animals. These plastics sit in the body of the animal blocking the digestive tract. The animals can no longer eat, this happens causing them to die. Turtles also suffer from eating plastics. Turtles eat buoyant plastics like balloons, which resemble jelly fish. These plastics lodge in their throats causing the turtles to suffocate. Some scientists have estimated that up to 100,000 animals are affected by ocean
